International goals

While doing the stats table, I realised an error with the stat of four international goals scored. On Gilberto's sambafoot page, http://www.sambafoot.com/en/players/51_Gilberto_Silva.html - it lists Gilberto as having scored four international goals. One of the goals which is counted is an own goal against Uruguay: http://www.sambafoot.com/en/selecao/2003_World_Cup_Qualifications/361_Brazil_Uruguay.html. Own goals do not count towards the tally, so I took one away. I hope that saves someone thinking I've taken away a goal for no reason.

Also;

Martin tamb spotted a couple more errors with the Sambafoot international caps. Here is what he says:

About Gilberto's caps, I also use the same source as you from sambafoot.com, however, that list includes non official friendly matches. In that list, there are 4 non official friendly matches, which are: vs Selection of Catalonia 2002, vs Selection of Catalonia 2004, vs Sevilla FC 2005, vs Luzern Selection 2006. That's why I'm reducing his caps from 49(4) by 4. His total would be 45(4) from this source
To differ the official and non official matches, I use this page as reference, http://paginas.terra.com.br/esporte/rsssfbrasil/sel/brazila.htm.
Other problems with sambafoot.com is that they also include the matches for the Olympic football team. According to FIFA this does not account into national team caps. Fortunately, for Gilberto this wasn't a problem.
However, another source that i use is http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/team/squad.html?team=BRA. As this one is managed by FIFA, I assume this is the most reliable source. This stats only includes caps and goals at the end of World Cup 2006. You just need to add them with the recent 4 matches under Dunga. But this means he has only 44(3) caps.
That's when I use other source http://www.rsssf.com/miscellaneous/braz-recintlp.html. This page has stats up to Norway match on August 2006. THe listing shows Gilberto has 41(3) caps and we need to add 3 recent matches which resulted to 44(3) caps.
I still doesn't know what caused the difference. All the matches (except those 4) in sambafoot listings were official matches. But two other sources shows that he only has 44(3) caps that's why I'm using that info. The only explanation that I'm thinking is that sambafoot confuses Gilberto (LB from Hertha) and Gilberto Silva for one occasion.

It seems that Martin is right there - so as of October 9 2006 (after the Kuwait friendly), his caps should stand at 44 with 3 international goals.

Gilberto images

These images are all uploaded to WP or the Commons. There have been copyright issues with a few of them in the past, even though they are all released by their respective creators under the Sharealike 2.0 license. I am putting this gallery here so I can see clearly all the images available, and for other people to discuss as they wish. -GilbertoSilvaFan 23:24, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

I would suggest trimming Image:Gilberto_School_Visit.jpg down so it only contains Mr Silva. As it is quite a high quality photo, it could be used in the info box. If/when I get my photoshop working, I will also enhance my photo as the it was taken with an old phone camera at the time. Of course the ideal photograph would be a frontal photograph of Gilberto whilst playing football, similar to Image:Gilberto Silva.png but higher quality, without the net and a football. Image:Gilberto Interview.jpg could also do with a little tweaking as it seems rather dull, not offence. ;) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Andypandy.UK (talkcontribs) 17:41, 22 February 2007 (UTC).

Thanks for the comments Andeh, much obliged. My brain is in bullet point mode today, so check this, yo.

  • I am now in the process of procuring this photo (or a cropped version) for the infobox. Negotiations are under way.
  • I cropped the school photo (see above), though not how you suggested. This is due to the above point (ie. it isn't needed for the info box anymore, so instead I just cut out lots of gym-wall.)
  • If you could pretty-up your camera phone photo at any point, that would be smashing.
  • Image:Gilberto Silva.png will soon no longer be needed, hooray.
  • You are certainly right about Image:Gilberto_Interview.jpg, it is dull indeed. It'll probably end up getting replacerated with Image:Gilberto_Silva_Streetleague.jpg.

Thanks for your input again, I'll message you once I've rearranged all the images, and if you're in the mood, you can say what you think. Being God, I'd say you are certainly entitled to this. -GilbertoSilvaFan 17:35, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm dubious on some of these images. The one of him playing a mandolin is at a resolution that matches PAL tv, and is showing video artifacts. Did you take it as a screenshot from a TV show? Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 18:52, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Night Gyr. The image which you raised concerns about was ripped from a video which I filmed myself. I interviewed Gilberto, and I own the copyright to the (extremely hi-res) video footage which I filmed. None of the other images listed above violate any kind of copyright - some of them were also photographed by myself. Thanks for the message. -GilbertoSilvaFan 19:38, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Quote cited in this article cannot be found?

The following quote in this article:

"If you never give up then you always have a chance, and they got a great example from a World Cup winner. You only have to see where Gilberto was when we got the ball back and where he was when he scored his goal. Remember this is a guy who has won everything. —Arsène Wenger[29]"

... cannot be found at the reference provided, which is http://home.skysports.com/worldcup/player.aspx?plid=13201&clid=614.

Can someone check and do something about this?

AppleJuggler 00:20, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Good spot, AppleJuggler. The quote used to be on the page which it cites, but Sky Sports seem to have changed the quote to "People forget that Gilberto is a world champion, but he's a quiet guy and doesn't want any special attention". I guess that the quote can either be changed to that, removed, or it could stay - on the grounds that Sky Sports did once source it. Do as you will :-) -GilbertoSilvaFan 19:45, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

date links

I have removed most of them as I se no point in them on this page ... this has not been to everyone's liking. If someone could please explain the value of date links to this article I will leave them alone ........ Abtract 23:57, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for working on the article. From what I can see, it's actually a policy. Read through Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers) and see what you reckon. -GilbertoSilvaFan 15:49, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your work on the article. WP:MOSDATE is a guideline, which asks to wikilink partial dates (month and date) or full dates to enable user preference - not for the link itself. Shouldn't debate about the wikilinking of dates be taken at WP:MOSDATE or even at meta? SeveroTC 19:11, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
I read it as "this is the way to do it" rather than "you must do this" but I could be wrong. I just know it looks really peculiar to see so many links to dates that no-one is every going to activate ... especially since the years are all linked even if the same year is repeated many times (against policy). What do you mean by "user preference"? Abtract 22:48, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
If you click on the my preferences tab, and then the Date and time tab, you can select how you like dates to be shown. It is so that I can write a date how I am used to writing it, and someone else can read the date as they like to see it, a neat trick of the MediaWiki software. This only works with wikilinked dates. The links themselves, to the article of the day or year are pretty meaningless. This is why WP:MOSDATE suggests we should link a month-day or month-day-year combination. You are right in thinking MOSDATE is a guideline, rather than policy, but I don't see why it shouldn't be applied? Years by themselves shouldn't be linked for the same reason - the link is meaningless and there is no preference to be gained. SeveroTC 23:07, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
To add, here is the Meta page: Help:Date formatting and linking. SeveroTC 23:11, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
OK that makes some kind of sense, I've not come across it before. Presumably years, even when part of a full date, should not be linked? Anyway I will withdraw from editing along those lines now that I understand why it was done. Abtract 07:24, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
Years should be linked when—and only when—part of a full date. So, I would link March 11, or March 11 1974, but not March, or March 1974, or 1974. The only time you would link years in isolation is if it was a piped link, and the destination was a useful link. So Gilberto Silva won the FIFA World Cup in 2002. Some editors automatically link years as other projects they contribute to do link years in isolation – I think the Dutch language wikipedia does this, however it is against guideline on en:Wikipedia. Regards, SeveroTC 09:10, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
Can someone undo the un-linked date edit or just re-add the links again? Cheers. -GilbertoSilvaFan 17:13, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
Just went through the Biography section, I think they are all done but it could do with a check. I noticed many of the references are just written out rather than using citation templates such as {{cite news}} or {{cite web}}—do you think it would be better with templated references GilbertoSilvaFan? SeveroTC 21:07, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Severo, amazing job. Here is a comparison of the article prior to it going on the main page vs. now: [1]. Looks like you got all the date links, though I have only checked briefly. (I'm on Wikipedia in internet cafes these days, makes it hard to be thorough.) Regarding the cite templates, I'm in 100% favour of improving the article in any way possible. It is a goal of mine to have this article stay as an 'example article' on Wikipedia, so obviously I'd love to see the funky new citation templates introduced. However, I regret that I do not have time to do the changes myself. If you would help out with this, I'd be very grateful. Cool. Anyway, it's been an interesting experience having the article go on the main page. It was a little chaotic, but at least the article has seen considerable improvement as a result. Thanks to all the vandal-reverters, and the people (Chen, Severo etc) who have helped out in the aftermath. I don't really need to be thanking anybody though really, because obviously it's not my article... but anyway. *slinks back into wikibreak* -GilbertoSilvaFan 16:51, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

David Tirrell?

Can somebody either confirm or nuke that stuff about him changing his name? I can't look up the interview to double check that dubious info that was added during the page's TFA run. Circeus 22:12, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Stats source

Noticed a little contradictory editing over Gilberto's height, possibly stemming from these two sources:

I don't really want to clog up the infobox with references to the same place so I'll let someone else (GilbertoSilvaFan perhaps?) find a way to incorporate them. Just judging by first impressions, I'd say the second website seems more reliable. QmunkE 20:40, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks QmunkE. Now I know where these allegations of 185cm (6'1") are coming from! ;-) The reason I keep reverting Gilberto's height to 6'3", is that Gilberto actually told me he's 191cm. I know that sounds a bit silly!... it's true though. I know I should cite an actual source for the statistic, but it seems wrong to just cite him as being 185cm because of [misinformed] websites, when I know for a fact that he is 191cm. What do you suggest? Just cite one of the sites which say he's 191? Or cite contradicting source and say he's in between? Or just cite neither (like it currently is)? Anyway. Thanks for all your work, I'm always very appreciative of people who spend time helping out on Bertie's article.
All the best, GilbertoSilvaFan 21:29, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Found two more sources which support the 1.91m figure
I'd say that's a decent enough majority to confirm it, pick whichever. Maybe use one which contains most/all of the biographical information in the infobox (DOB, full name etc.) and source them together somehow? Or individually, whichever seems best. QmunkE 21:36, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
I had the same doubt. I believed he was 1.84m (as said in basesoccer.com, his P.R.), but I saw this discussion here.
So, I went to the source. I asked Gilberto Silva himself (yes, I have his email, I know him) and he told me that he's actually 1.85 meters. He gave me a few more informations (press releases, some stats) and I'll add then here very soon. --Fabioassis (talk) 19:34, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Name

Has Gilberto Silva requested to be known as just "Gilberto" from now on? I'm just watching the Man Utd v Arsenal game (United are 2-1 up as I speak ;-) ) and the commentators are referring to him as Gilberto, rather than Gilberto Silva. Furthermore, the caption at the bottom of the screen just said "Gilberto" too. - PeeJay 14:34, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Good question. I think commentators have always changed around what they call him; some of the time it's "Gilberto", sometimes "Silva" and other times "Gilberto Silva". This confusion is also reflected in what he has written on his shirt; he started at Arsenal having "Silva", then it changed to "Gilberto", and for Brazil it has always been "G. Silva". I think the problem is that there's so many other "Gilberto"s around, that depending on whether another one is playing in the same game, he has to be referred to as "Silva" for clarity's sake.... but when he's the only Gilberto in the game, people feel it's silly to refer to him as Silva. In the past, the argument was raised that this article should be changed to "Gilberto", but seeing how much he's referred to "Gilberto Silva" on the whole, this seems unnecessary. -GilbertoSilvaFan 15:00, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
P.S. I heard that Man United fans were singing "Glory Glory" in pubs when the score was 2-1. Glory indeed =)
Yes, I felt a bit silly about my comment on the score after the game. Anyway, I've just seen a report on ESPNSoccernet, and they refer to him as just "Gilberto" too. I'm just wondering if there should be a note in the lead to reflect his current naming preferences, if indeed he has one. - PeeJay 15:56, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
