Geocoding

"Geocoding" is a well established concept in geographical information systems, referring to computing a geographic location - like latitude/longitude - from a textual address like a street address (reverse geocoding is inferring a street address from a geographic location). It should not be hard to document that; there are scores to hundreds of websites, databases, and programs for this purpose.

What this article describes is assigning a geoposition to a photograph, which is most commonly referred to as GeoTagging; photographs are one example of the media referenced in the GeoTagging article.

This article is also unreferenced and seems to be mostly original research; even discussions here are not about what the secondary sources say, but about how to describe something from scratch. 74.85.19.241 (talk) 22:19, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

I agree. Geocoding is the process of converting an address to a geographic coordinate. Attaching a set of coordinates to a photograph should be called geotagging (or possibly georeferencing). D W Farthing (talk) 08:32, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Holiday Maps Link

This link is subjective and worded like an advertisement - certainly not language of an encyclopedia. Suggest it's removed (again).

How would you suggest it is worded? It is clearly not an advertisement as there is no profit or gain to be made from hits, it is simply an example of a website that uses geocoded photographes, much like panoramio.com. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.212.49.206 (talk) 09:49, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Since the collection of sites supporting the technique will continue to grow and the mechanics of the process is what is important from the perspective of this page, I suggest we keep the list simple, with only features that are relevant from a geocoding point of view. Need for focus on photo geocoding hardware and software

Since the data from any GPS that can record tracks is usable for photo geocoding, I feel it's better to focus on devices that specifically include software to geocode photos. GPS loggers and trackers should be separated off onto a page just on that topic, or listed on the GPS page. I have edited the list to include only units with specific photo geocoding support. Also, there is a confusion between "methods" and "software". Methods should cover just the major approaches: automatic in-camera, manual, automatic synchronisation after photo download. I have made this change. Rakerman (talk) 11:02, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Specific sites

Need to avoid mentioning specific sites as that will end up with a list. Removed mention of Photosynth as it is pure manual (click on map location) geocoding; it has no "landmark recognition" capabilities. Rakerman (talk) 15:17, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
