Adelaide Sturt Morphett[edit]

Adelaide Sturt Morphett was born to "the lady of George Morphett Esq." on the Enmore on 7 January 1846. When she marries she has become the daughter of John Morphett, likewise when she dies. If she was adopted by John Morphett, why only her and not any of George's two previous and two succeeding children? According to a genealogy website, George's children were:

Fanny Australia Morphett (1838– )
Nathaniel George Morphett (1840– )

(Adelaide Sturt Morphett 1846 not mentioned)

Eustace Morphett 21 December (1847– )
Mary Jane Morphett (1848– )

This genealogy site agrees on the date but has John and Elizabeth her parents.

This genealogy site has her born at Morphettville on 23 May 1846 (maybe christening record) to John and Elizabeth.

This genealogy site agrees on the date, and "aboard the Enmore" but again John and Elizabeth are the parents. This site lists the John Morphett children and Adelaide Sturt Morphett slots neatly into the sequence.

This site takes an each-way punt, giving the father as John George Morphett.

Another possibility is that "the lady" was actually Elizabeth, and George was accompanying his brother's wife. Not impossible, in fact that sort of thing was common. Any number of reasons why she was not being escorted by her husband. But Dulcie Perry (in her book Sir John Morphett : a South Australian colonist of distinction) insists Elizabeth did not leave Australia until 1855, by which time she had ten children.
