power[edit]

Why doesn't this dam produce power? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.194.192.100 (talk) 01:15, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not entirely too sure but my best guess would be the small size and situation of its drainage basin. It isn't too extensive and doesn't have a high-altitude source of snow-melt. With that, the annual water flow isn't consistent and largely based on floods. A hydropower plant is best suited for somewhat consistent water flows.--NortyNort (Holla) 04:08, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Gathwright Dam's primary purpose, despite claims to the contrary by those promoting the project back in the Seventies, has always been to provide a regulated flow of water to the WESTVACO Paper Mill located just down stream in Covington, VA. Any other benefits to the reservoir's neighbors downstream are strictly ancillary. RobertWadeBess (talk) 23:03, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge with Lake Moomaw[edit]

Lake Moomaw is the reservoir formed by Gathright Dam. There's not really enough separate content to support two different articles. Bitmapped (talk) 01:29, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, pending a big expansion --which has not occurred in four years-- the lake should be merged into the dam article.--NortyNort (Holla) 20:19, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Merge completed. Bitmapped (talk) 23:53, 19 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
