Feeder schools[edit]

Can someone add feeder schools? I only know of two, and possibly Eastway.

Name of the school[edit]

Does anyone have a source for the OFFICIAL name of this school? Although it was the superintendent's name, I have never heard it referred to as "Elmer Garinger High School," nor have I seen that it print. The official name is "Garinger High School". This can be seen on the Garinger web page and the CMS page on Garinger. The history of Garinger never suggests that it was at any point named "Elmer Garinger High School". In fact, a Google search for "Elmer Garinger High School" returns only 7 results, mostly from Wikipedia. A search for "Garinger High School" returns 894 results. The school may have been named for Elmer Garinger, but there is no evidence the school was given his full name. Since there's no evidence to support the name "Elmer Garinger High School" except Wikipedia itself, I'm moving the page. User:BostonHMann

Problems at the school[edit]

The "Problems" section was full of opinion. I removed "the vents only blow hot air" because it made the article inconsistent -- what vents are blowing hot air in the summer if there is no heating during the winter? I went to Garinger. In 9th Grade my class didn't have a full-time physical science teacher until december. My English 11 class had well over 30 students. In 10th Grade two Math Prep classes were merged due to budget shortage, this meant 35-40 students in one class. Teachers often told us that they had to buy their own copy paper because the school was running out. During my 11th grade year (i beleive it was) the celing in room 315 caved in, thank God nobody was in there at the time.

I didn't write the heating problem, but there is some truth behind it: The heat wasen't turned on until mid-winter, many people had to wear big winter coats in class because of this. The air ran from May (even though April in Charlotte can get very hot) until Christmas break and didn't always function correctly, room 110 had a terrible problem where the unit sounded like a car in desprate need of a tune up (I hope this has been addressed since I finished in 2002, but I've heard many of the problems still exist from my current college classmates). Some of this stuff may seem outragous, but trust me, I saw it first hand. You can check the rest of my articles, I don't post stuff I don't really beleive is true. As a former student of Garinger myself, I don't disagree. However, to meet the standards of Wikipedia, something more verifiable is needed. I left the part about teachers having to pay for their own supplies, even though it really needs a source, but removed the line about giving their job an honest effort. I believe they do, but it's point-of-view and really doesn't belong in an encyclopedic article. Garinger was certainly underfunded over 10 years ago; unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any budget information from CMS that supported this. CMS either does not release, or I could not find, school-specific budget information. More verifiable information is needed on overcrowding; since it lacks a source, the 40 students per teacher ratio might as well have been pulled from thin air. I did add some actual statistics to the "Student behavior" section. The fact that only 26% of students believe their classmates are well-behaved certainly supports the idea of behavior problems existing at the school -- and this sort of data allows you to say it without bringing your own point-of-view into it. That's the sort of thing this article needs more of. Hopefully, verifiable information can be found that documents the problems we have all known about for so long. Official School Name[edit]

There are any number of Garinger graduates in the Charlotte area that will confirm the school is named after Elmer H. Garinger, former superintendent of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. I am a 1968 graduate. The number of 10-12 grade students exceeded 2400 at Garinger in 1968. My understanding is Elmer H. Garinger was the largest high school in North Carolina in 1968. My graduating class of consisted of approximately 550 graduates (out of 603 candidates).

Closure[edit]

I could find no evidence supporting this so I deleted it's mention. What was mentioned is that Garinger won't be getting money to renovate it's gym. That's the budget change that effects Garinger.source BobbyAFC 00:34, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
