Awkward wording in introduction[edit]

The wording in the introductory section, here feels awkward.

"However Mendoza's command broke Galvarino's division after over an hour of combat and won the battle killing three thousand Indians, and captured more than eight hundred including him.[3] Mendoza ordered him to be executed by being thrown to the dogs.[4]"

I thought we were talking about the Mapuche. Why is Galvarino here being described as "Indian"? Why not simply refer to them as Mapuche?

'Indian' is a collective word for the indigenous peoples of the Americas such as the Mapuche. 2600:8800:2396:1B00:249B:1103:B135:152D (talk) 17:18, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
