alt text for image[edit]

Tintor2, if you read the wp:alt that you referenced you'll discover that the audience for alt text is users who for one reason or another are not able to see the image. Such as a blind person using a screen reader. Because the infobox template does not fill out the image alt text attribute it has to be directly added. When you remove it you are preventing the image information from being available to the visually impaired. It does not add redundant information because the template does not fill out the alt text for the image. Bilrand (talk) 18:43, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Because the html img alt attribute is what screen readers look for to describe an image for visually impaired users. This is a low lever HTML standards thing. As of right now the image in question has zero information in the img tag that a screen reader can use to describe the image. The caption is a page level chunk of text that a screen reader has no way to associate with an img tag. I see. However, it looks a bit hard to make good alt considering all the things shown. "The poster shows six people in the top including an armored person, a blond boy, an orange-haired girl, a black haired man and a black haired woman in blue, and a man wearing a white coat. The bottom shows shadowy nine figures." What do you think? Should the background also be mentioned?Tintor2 (talk) 03:17, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think maybe it can be assumed that anybody visiting a Fullmetal Alchemist page does not necessarily need that much detail describing the image. The guidelines suggest keeping the alt text short (unfortunately it doesn't say how short). We can assume the reader has or will read the main page of the article. I think it's fine to say it is a movie poster and also say the names of the brothers.
