Nationality[edit]

In the german Wikipedia, it's written that Franz Xaver Messerschmidt was a german sculptor. Where is the truth?

FXM was born in Wiesensteig Germany, spent his early youth in Munich. He is thus by definition a German. He did however spent much of his life in the Austro Hungarian empire. Much in Vienna and the last few years of his life in Bratislava.

Messerschmidt died in the majority-German city of Pressburg in the Holy Roman Empire. 1906 photos of the heads by Josef Wlha (let's find them all)[edit]

At the moment, we have images for 19 out of the 49 heads known to survive.

Unfortunately, I was only able to locate one of the 45 photographs of the heads published in 1906 and 1909 by the Viennese photographer Josef Wlha (1842–1918). These images are definitely in public domain by now and would cover most of the remaining lacunas (heads Nos. 4, 31, 41, 49 are not part of the portfolio). Perhaps, someone will have better luck with this, so here are the references:
