Census information[edit]

The 1870 US Census gives Frank Johnson, aged 89 ( [sic]), musician, black, born in Virginia ( [sic]), and living in Wilmington, North Carolina. He is living with Amelia (age 36), Sarah J (age 15), Frank (age 12), Henry (age 9), Edward (age 7) and Alice (age 5). The census return doesn't explain the relationships, but all have the surname Johnson and all except Frank Sr. were born in North Carolina. It seems highly likely that this is "our" Frank, though it differs in his age (suggesting he was born around 1781) and his birth state. Those with Ancestry.com subscriptions can access it here. Ten years earlier, in the 1860 census, there is another Frank Johnson in Wilmington, also a musician, aged 32 so born c.1828, married to Amelia and with children Sarah and Frank. So, it seems reasonable to assume that "our" Frank was the father of Frank born c.1828, and grandfather of Frank born c.1858. I can't find "our" Frank in the 1860 or earlier censuses. As these are primary sources they perhaps shouldn't be referenced directly in the article, though I wouldn't be against a few of the details being tweaked. Still, it might help in further research.
