Date of construction[edit]

There doesn't seem to be consensus on this among the sources. So far I've seen "late 19th century", "turn of the 20th century", 1910, 1912 and 1913. Was it perhaps constructed over a long period? Deb (talk) 12:11, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, thanks, Deb I just saw turn of the century and 1913. But then, I was searching on 1913 from the article. Perhaps we should say "about the turn of the century" and have a note with the various dates and sources?

I'm not sure that we will find the answer. Possibly there is no reliable documentation to back up a construction date. I note that the French owner died in France in 1915 - which didn't give him much time to "settle" in Barbados! Deb (talk) 19:33, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I ran out of reliable sources - I had a hard time finding any newspaper articles or web pages that weren't travel type sites. Regarding the year of construction, the Barbados National Trust said it was built about 1913 - and so did another source. I didn't find sources for the other information you mentioned (late19th century, 1910, 1912). I think that is good to go in the body of the article, perhaps with a note saying that it was built about the turn of the century or early in the century with the relevant sources. If that's the most common finding, okay by me. I have a feeling that most of these sources have copied wording from one another. I went through Google Books to look for something more reliable, and that's where I found these. They are still mostly tourist guides:

No, I didn't word it that way, based upon your additions. I did see in the List of plantations in Barbados that all of the buildings seem to have been built by 1913. There seems to be some list, like a tax list, or some source from 1913 with all the plantations with the owner's name at that time, but there aren't links to the two sources, so I cannot see what's up. My guess is it was built in 1910 or 1912, but definitely by 1913 - but that would be WP:OR, so I think that the note in the article is fine. No, I'm sure it's fine. I expect you're right about there being a list, which would mean they know it was there by 1913 but don't know exactly when.
