Gary Knight[edit]

I note that Gary has been removed from the match details. Although not in the starting line up in the programme he is listed as playing on scrum.com's summary. Did he definitely not play?Kwib (talk) 12:47, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've fished out the 1986-87 Rothmans Rugby Yearbook which gives the details of both of the IRB centenary matches from April 1986 (pages 113-114). Knight's listed as playing for the Rest against the Lions in the Cardiff game but not shown in the line-ups for the 5N v Overseas Unions game at Twickenham, where van der Merwe and Rodriguez are the two props listed. The Rothmans books are usually very reliable, and published at the time, so I tend to go with them as good data sources if I ever come across an inconsistency with more recent website data. I also realise I've trampled over the team lists a bit, converting "initials and surname" into "first name and surname" - my own preference is for the latter as I think the "initials" style looks a bit dated these days, but if you prefer the other way I wouldn't be offended to see my revisions undone. --Bcp67 (talk) 14:44, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The link at the bottom of the article to the scrum.com answers article (IRB Centenary Matches, Irish try-scorers against.... etc) also shows the same line-up as in the Rothmans book with Knight not playing in the Twickenham game - this isn't entirely surprising as John Griffiths is both the author of the article and the stats man for the Rothmans books.
