Irish or English?[edit]

Why is this person described as an 'Irish' cricker? Surely choosing you can't be one nationality but play for a different country? There are many examples, but please refer to Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Strauss or Ben Hutton - all born outside England but referred to as English in their respective biographys.

He is an Irish cricketer who plays for England. You do not need to be English to play for the England cricket team, any number of Welsh and Scots nationals have played for England since the dawn of international cricket. For historical reasons, the England cricket team represents more than just England. Morgan is no different. How does English cricketer of Irish nationality sound? It isn't neat but this is a difficult one. As he plays his cricket for England he is an English international, an English Cricketer and yet he still remains Irish. He is best known for playing for England but most certainly isn't English. I think the sentence that was there was fine and there was no need to change it. If look at other sporting persons it says their nationality first and then there team(s). e.g. Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Ed Joyce and Owais Shah. The lede for sportspeople appears to take one of the following forms. There doesn't appear to be any standard:
  • Name (Nationality, date of birth) is a sportsperson-type who plays for teamname
  • Name is a teamname sportsperson-type of nationality nationality
  • Name is a nationality sportsperson-type who plays for teamname
Certainly, MOS:BIO states that the opening paragraph should have
  1. Name(s) and title(s), if any (see, for instance, also Wikipedia:Naming conventions (royalty and nobility));
  2. Dates of birth and death, if known (see Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Dates of birth and death);
  3. Nationality and ethnicity – (In most modern-day cases this will mean the country of which the person is a citizen or national, or was a citizen when the person became notable. Ethnicity or sexuality should not generally be emphasized in the opening unless it is relevant to the subject's notability. Similarly, previous nationalities and/or the country of birth should not be mentioned in the opening sentence unless they are relevant to the subject's notability.)
  4. What the person did;
  5. Why the person is significant.
We also have a similar sportpersons, Ed Joyce, who is similarly an Irish cricketeer who played for both England and Ireland. I believe it is better to follow the same conventions and with an eye on MOS:BIO I've changes the lede to reflect this as follows:
Eoin Joseph Gerard Morgan (pronounced the same as "Owen")(born 10 September 1986) is an Irish cricketer who plays for the England cricket team.
I have omitted the fact that the previously played for the Ireland cricket team since I believe he is notably for playing for the England cricket team, and the subject is covered in more detail in subsequent sections anyway. --HighKing (talk) 17:30, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your source for Morgan being Irish is his profile on the cricinfo website, which makes no mention of him being Irish, but describes him as an "Irish born Englishman". Was there ever a consensus on what to do here? I see someone has just changed it back to "an Irish cricketer" which I'm going to revert, but happy to put back if I'm missing a clear resolution. Spike 'em (talk) 09:08, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, going through the history, I see he's been Irish for ages and this was removed in an unsigned, uncommented change [1] in January this year, so I'm leaving the "Irish" in for now Spike 'em (talk) 09:24, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In this article discussing another player's eligibility, Morgan started that his mother is English and that he had held a British passport since birth. If he had always been a dual national should the lead reflect this? Spike 'em (talk) 08:10, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There had been some edit warring on this again I've changed back to "Irish-born" and added the link above to the youth section. Unless someone can provide a source to show he is not British then I think this is the best solution, and is used on other cricketers who do not play for the country of their birth. Career Stats in Header[edit]

Morgan has been the captain of the Egland T20I team for a considerable length of time and made 81 appearances in this format. I believe it should be changed to Test -> ODI -> T20I -> FC.
