Requested move 21 January 2018

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: no consensus. See stronger arguments against renaming this article with either proposal. However, since "cologne" is an English "loanword", WP:NCCAPS would seem to support lower casing. As is usual, a no-consensus outcome means that in a few months editors may open a new requested move debate to garner consensus for the highest and best title for this article. Happy Hearts Day! Eau de Cologne → ? – I am suggesting two new names for this article, either Eau de cologne or Cologne (perfume). The reason for the first name is because a lot of dictionaries name it with cologne lowercased. The reason for the second name is because Wikipedia's naming conventions say that use the English name in the title of the article. Parenthetical disambiguation is used to disambiguate with the city in Germany. I can also see the second name used in Britannica[1]. 50.255.141.222 (talk) 16:07, 21 January 2018 (UTC)--Relisting.Ammarpad (talk) 03:06, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Support Cologne (perfume), per nom. This one has popped into my attention a couple of times since I've read it, and I would think, without statistical evidence, that Cologne (perfume) is the common name. Randy Kryn (talk) 01:37, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Can't see any problem with the current title whatsoever. It's a very common name (probably just as common, if not more so, than Cologne alone), it avoids disambiguation per WP:NATURAL, and as Cologne is a proper name the capitalisation is fine. -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:07, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Oppose Cologne (perfume) per WP:NCDAB, which favors natural disambiguation. The OED does not capitalize the C in "eau de cologne," as the request states, so that option could be discussed further. Dekimasuよ! 01:00, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Eau de CologneCologne (perfume) – Nobody calls it eau de cologne. 192.107.120.90 (talk) 16:50, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

  • Moved from technical requests. Has been discussed previously. –Ammarpad (talk) 18:02, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
  • As above. "Oppose Cologne (perfume) per WP:NCDAB, which favors natural disambiguation. The OED does not capitalize the C in 'eau de cologne'... so that option could be discussed further." Dekimasuよ! 19:42, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Neutral, but DEFINITELY CREATE REDIRECT, no matter what. Paintspot Infez (talk) 14:13, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Again, I am not under the impression that this would be a particularly useful redirect, but if you want to create a redirect yourself, be bold. Dekimasuよ! 20:21, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Since I call it eau de cologne, does that invalidate the sole argument of "nobody calls it eau de cologne"? —  AjaxSmack  17:46, 9 June 2018 (UTC)
That's two of us already. JFG talk 15:39, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Oppose but I'll go create the redirect, which sounds helpful for somebody typing "cologne" in the search box. — JFG talk 15:39, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Oppose everyone except nom calls it Eau de Cologne. In ictu oculi (talk) 08:55, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

L.T. Piver

A French perfume company, founded in 1774, and run from 1799 by Louis Toussaint Piver, was a producer of "L’Eau de Cologne des Princes". Was this a significant part of the story ?
