Debate[edit]

What has to happen for an EDM to be debated in the house? Darren Reynolds 08:03, 21 January 2009

On meaning of 'Tabled'[edit]

We need to be careful with this term. In the US to table a motion is to stop discussing it (until a vote to untable it passes), but in the UK it means to begin discussing it. (I'm told there was a horrible fight at a meeting during WWII where the British were insisting on tabling an issue and the US was insisting that instead if be discussed immediately...which of course were the same thing.) "[...]May not be signed by[...]"[edit]

Could someone please clarify the following:

"EDMs may not be signed by government ministers, Parliamentary Private Secretaries or the Speaker of the House of Commons."

Does this mean that the aforementioned parties are not allowed to sign it, or that their signature is not required? ATMarsdenTalk · {Semi-Retired} 10:31, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It means they are not allowed to sign, to quote "Parliamentary Private Secretaries must not associate themselves with particular groups advocating special policies”.--Salix alba (talk): 19:55, 7 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
