Controversy and criticism

Somebody keeps removing the controversy and critcism. It's not negative criticism, it's the truth. I recommend this page be locked with the fact that his name is quite coincidentally similar to two prevalent drugs out on the street (E pills and 40 ouncers) and that all of his lyrics (from his latest album) are pushing nothing but drugs, gas guzzling cars, and putting down women. And then he's even got the nerve to sing a song called "I'm just happy to be here" which... I'm not sure WHO's point of view that is, but it sure isn't his "no medicaire but I'm just happy to be alive...da da da......" what's that bull@#%$?

The E stands for Earl. He gained that name in the late 1980's. When did E get popular in Vallejo? He makes no mention of E or thizzin til about Breakin News (Not including mix tapes). Look at any interview, or if u want I could provide a source for ya. Also Happy to Be here is an uplifting song, just telling it how it is. I believe that there is a factual error on this page. The page states that E-40 created the word yola a corruption of the word yayo. I am quite positive that it is the other way around.

In one famous and substantiaing lyric we hear E-40 rap "I hope I dont go back to slangin' yayo/ To get my mayo"

wrong. yayo was around way before e-40

A couple questions / ponderings

• From my understanding, in the script of scarface, Al Pacino pronounced llello "yayo".
• The gap band thing is true, but also on Hall of Game (i'll have to get back to u on which track, got the damn song stuck in my head now), he credits 3 x Crazy (Keak Da Sneak's former group) for teaching him how to say fo sheezie, fo shizzle, however 40 was the first to put it on wax.
• Watch this Sunday for making of Snap Yo Fingers on MTV2.
• Also, what is this about "He is the one that made the "Thizzle Dance" popular?" Can you explain? U aren't talking about 40 r u? or Mac Mutha Fuckin Dre! Just wondering, props on the User name tho, "User:Thizz - Expert in PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. And I THIZZ!" That had me laughing.
• What is with all the dead links on the page?

You smell me

I suggested adding the phrase "you semll me?" to the hyphy page, and I was (rightfully, probably) declined. E-40 seems to have coined the line and says it one hell of a lot, so let's throw it in his page. There's already a paragraph about his additions to the lexicon so it shouldn't be hard to integrate.

controversy???

Please remove the part that E stands for Extacy in his name. His name is Earl, and unless there is a citation that he somehow derived his name from Extacy then there is no reason for it to be on the page. The only drug he ever talked about on the Mail Man was smoking weed and drinking Carlos Rossi. Trust, we've been over and over this. The consensus is if nobody can site it by the 25th (which is today), it will be taken down.

So, no doubt there is controversy about E-40, but that section is rediculous.... first of all, HIS name (not their) has nothing to do with MDMA, it is his first initial. Secondly, I hardly think that someone's "web ranking" is an accurate gauge for their popularity in North America, and using "web presence" as a measure is in itself very disturbing and is used as a way (intentionally or not) to discredit or further marginalize those who lack internet access... which, if you cannot read between the lines or have your head in the sand means almost the entirety of 40's audience—lower income minorities in urban areas. Further, even outside those groups a web site's hits are a lousy way to guage the popularity of an artist... I am a 30 year old, well educated and wel paid man with a fast internet connecction and all of 40's albums... yet I have never visited his site.

I will remove the name reference right now, unless someone can cite his actual name being criticized for proper reasons.

The second issue I will leave for now because I believe it is important that everyone notices and thiks about this issue... it is a recurring cause and symptom of wikipedia's systemic bias. Reggaedelgado 03:32, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Does every rapper have a controversy section? Who is hating so much on 40? Like he's the only one writing about cocaine?? What source says that these two songs are controversial? He's been rappin bout yay for 15 years, what does this particular song have to do with taking advantage of young caucasian women? And what is wrong with rapping about muscle cars? Have u ever been to a side show? You'd pic up a mic and be rappin bout that too. It's not only GMC, but what about 5.0s and cougars ("Cutlass, Stangs, Cougars . . ." Keak Da Sneak)? Mr. Anonymous user... we all thank you for your opinion. Personally, I wish that 40 would rap about some more positive subjects... Yes, I do listen to the record, and I skip most songs. And I think that it is too bad that a man of his lyrical talents spends most of his time rapping about drugs. But, saying that he is not popular based on his web presence (I bet his downloads would tell a different story) is not appropriate. I'm not telling anyone one to listen to their TV... (I don't spend any time on east coast hip hop articles...just a joke), I'm just trying to make sure that people who look up E-40 in an encyclopedia can learn something somewhat non-biased. Comparing him to Tupac is not what people would come to see, nor is any human above reproach. I do not argue that there is not controversy about 40, but it should be noted from verifiable sources, not inferred from (unintentionally) biased data. • Yea, we need to come to a concensus. If there's no verifiable source to prove that he's getting paid to promote muscle cars (he's rapping about old cars, not new ones), and that he's promoting cocaine (he has plenty of songs talking about how bad it is -- 'Hope I don't go back' - Charlie Hustle), then that should not be on his page. Besides that, Richie Rich, Too Short, Mac Dre, and Tha Ambassador of tha bay himself have been rappping about muscle cars since Reagan was in office, before Desert Storm. Reggaedelgado is right, people do not come to his page to learn about things that are not true. Additionally if Anonymous listened to any of his cd's besides the new one you'd know there are many uplifting, songs that give hope to people that need it -- 'I Hope you get this kite' - Breakin News, 'Fallin Rain' - Grit & Grind, 'Seasoned' - Charlie Hustle, 'Things'll never change' - Hall of game, And of course, '1 Luv' - In a major way. Even on the new cd which unfortunately has spawned 'Record Haters' - Hall of game, There is 'I'm just happpy to be here.' Also watch any Biggie or Pac interview, they both rap about crack, and they both say they do it to share with people what is really going on where they from, not where anonymous is from?? Don't mean to call you out anonymous, but you must admit that wikipedians must assume you are making assumptions unless you cite a source.

Ok, controversy over? Please do not add another article about the controversy surrounding E-40 unless you have a credible source. Anonymous' addition made no sense, and even if it did it was not cited. So if you want to add it back, Anonymous, feel free, just please cite your sources so we may all come to a consensus. Telling us that his web presence is not as prevalent as 50 Cent's (when it is in fact 10 times that acccording to the only source you provided us) is hardly a credible source to claim that "most of North America is uninterested in him".

I feel we should work more on making pages for some of these dead links, eg. B-Legit, Droop-E, Rick Rock, Sick Wid It, E-40's discography, etc . . . instead of bickering about whether or not he is being endorsed by GM and Malt liqour, can you agree with that? -- Carlos 17:26, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

E stands for Ecstacy

Aight ya'll, as soon as anybody can cite where E stands for ecstacy, put that up. I'm glad you finally stopped being anonymous, but really, cite it before you put it up. No where ever has he mentioned his name refers to ecstacy, I even hit Justin Lomax up on myspace and he said no way. And if you don't know who Justin Lomax is then how u gonna say you know bout the bay?? But he never mentions it anywhere til in Breakin News, (2003) where he says "most of my homies be pushin thizz, and if u tarded u prolly dont even know what that izz" - If it was a fifth. Haha, I'm not that anonymous guy, as you can see from the fact that I don't talk IN ALL CAPS. I have no idea who Justin Lomax is, I just came here to clean up the article. Let's just leave the controversy section in for now, and hopefully the anonymous guy will be able to find a citation. If not, we can delete it. What does the 40 stand for (in your opinion)? Good point man, very sorry bout that. I just have no idea where this ecstacy reference is coming from? But yea, "Niggaz don't really know that I got my name from drinkin beer" - They Might Be Taping (Second verse). Justin Lomax is the founder of on-point productions, the comapny that made Treal TV, Treal #2, 23109, and a bunch of others. I heard an interview recently (can't remember where... it may even have been on that MTV "my block" segment) where 40 explained his name, saying simply that his first name was Earl and that when he was younger he was always drinking 40's. Can we take the ecstacy thing down now? It's been days and nobody has come up with a citation. That whole section just seems . . . slanderish? It's usually good to include a negative section, to outweigh the natural tendency of fans such as yourself to emphasize the positive aspects of an artist. As for removing the section, the anonymous guy hasn't made any edits recently. I asked him on his talk page to provide a citation. How about we take it down on May 25 if he hasn't got one? i've been listnin' to 40 water since i wuz like 8 n i love tha muzik. "northern california: i named it the Yay". he needz to realize he DidNt. i'm 17 now N i've been listenin' to people call the BAY AREA the yay area. since i wuz smaller (like 5/6).

E-40 did name the nothern part of california the Yay. he's been saying it for over 15 years.

People are always saying snoop dogg got his lingo from 40. I'm just trying to clarify that. I'm confused. 40's first album came out in 1994 but snoop dogg was saying stuff like that before on The Chronic.Drumac 04:48, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
