This is an error, Drakes Bay on the contrary was not named after Sir Francis Drake. The Spanish discovered it in 1602 by Vizcaino prior to San Francisco and a Spanish ship sank there in 1595 by Cermeno. It was named after St. Francis like San Francisco, where as when English map makers by the name of Henry Briggs discovered it renamed it Puerto de Francisco Drako, not Spanish at all. What Bay Sir Francis Drake did discover, some would argue is modern day Bodega Cove about 68 miles north of San Francisco, as with much evidence one man Bob Graham would analyze. In light of the uncertainty expressed by the Drake Historical Society at [1] you seem remarkably confident. Brian Kelleher and Bob Graham do seem to have mounted a strong argument for Campbell Cove as having a latitude much more consistent with Drake's recording of 38 degrees 30 minutes, but one cannot say by any means that this settles the matter. One thing that is clear however is that the evidence that Drake landed at Drakes Bay is pretty flimsy, and the question is likely to remain open for the foreseeable future. If no one raises any objection within the next month or so I'll edit the article to reflect this uncertainty, which it currently doesn't do justice to. --Vaughan Pratt (talk) 04:51, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

The question of how Drakes Bay got its name is separable from the question of who discovered it. Gudde's popular reference book 1000 California Place Names says that the bay is named after Sir Francis. That should not be take to imply that it was the place where he careened his ships in 1579. --Stepheng3 (talk) 19:07, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Rated this a stub since it is too short for higher class. Classify this as high in importance due to its very high biological productivity (including IBA within pt reyes), importance in history, and high visitor value as part of pt reyes natl seashore.
