Obama quote[edit]

Bender235, I don't understand why, in your edit summary, you directed me to WP policies on reliable source and original research. I never questioned the reliability of the source for the quote by President Obama, I only gave my opinion that it was not appropriate for inclusion in the context of this article. And I have no idea how you get that my opinion that something doesn't belong in the article because of it's relevance and/or context remotely approaches the original research policy. (Especially since original research is a policy to prevent an item's inclusion in the article, not to force it.) As I stated in my original edit summary, my reasons for deleting the quote were: (1) relevance of any politician's opinion on the talent, physical ability, etc. of an NFL draft prospect and (2) that the facts in the quote are simply inaccurate (or at least exaggerations), which is completely unrelated to the reliability of the source or whether it's what he actually said (neither of which I ever questioned). If there was a section in the article showing that Poe had garnered attention from a variety of people outside the "football world", or other examples of statements made which exaggerated his physical prowess, this quote would probably fit well. However, as a single example thrown in with no context, it just doesn't belong. --LarryJeff (talk) 15:07, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The quote is merely included to demonstrate one thing: Poe's performance at the NFL combine was noted outside the football world. That is, in my mind, a very relevant fact. And it does not require a seperate section to fully describe this media frenzy over Poe's combine workout. --bender235 (talk) 19:41, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, poor word choice on my part. I didn't mean adding a "section" to the article; "paragraph" would have been a better choice. But, in this case, we don't even have a single sentence in the text of the article having anything to do with notice outside the football world, or about any media frenzy. Instead, we have paragraphs with things said about him by sportswriters and "draft experts" but no mention of anything to do with anyone outside people who make their livings writing about or talking about sports. Then, over to the side we have a quote box with the statement the President made in an interview about concussions in sports. Hmm, I'm beginning to see your point. I still like to see some soundbite on Poe's combine performance included, simply because it set him apart from basically all other draft prospects (including Stephen Hill and RGIII). Would you agree with adding a comment by some sportswriter or draft analyst (Mayock, Pauline, Kiper, McShay, you name 'em)? --bender235 (talk) 21:32, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I absolutely think we need to point out the attention his combine performance got. Hey, without what he did at the combine, he doesn't move up to where my beloved Chiefs take him at 11, and I never even look at this article anyway :) (Too bad I'm not notable enough to get someone to post a quote from me) As far as the President's quote, it just occurred to me that when he said that, he hadn't even been asked about Poe, he just thought of him as some big guy who could really do some damage to somebody. And that was all because of the combine. That definitely deserves some mention if we can find where someone in print said as much. --LarryJeff (talk) 01:40, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
