Presidential election[edit]

There's a mention of the reaction to Hayes's official victory in South Carolina but it's not clear how that dispute fitted into all this. It also implies Hayes was declared to have won the state in mid December (or is that just because of the placement?) rather than the Electoral Commission ruling the following February.

Was the return for President/Electors also initially disputed or did that come up later? Electoral Commission (United States) suggests that the Democrats only claimed victory for Tilden after the non-incumbent government was set up but 1876 United States presidential election#Electoral disputes and the Compromise of 1877 suggests the Tilden electors were carrying forward the dispute over the official result. Did outsiders from one or both parties complicate the situation by coming in to claim victory? Timrollpickering (talk) 01:22, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
