Presidential Pardon?[edit]

In the section "Conscription issues" it is mentioned that Contino received a Presidential Pardon. For what "crime" and when was he convicted?--TGC55 (talk) 07:31, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect number of appearances on Ed Sullivan Show?[edit]

The claim the Contino appeared "for a record 48 times" on the Ed Sullivan Show is unsourced and possibly incorrect. While this claim is repeated in various articles, I couldn't locate a primary source for that number, and it appears dubious.

Evidence in favor of 48 appearances[edit]

"The Beauty of Imperfection, the Dick Contino Story" by Dick Contino and Corky Bennett says, "[Contino] also appeared on every major TV show including The Ed Sullivan Show, where he performed more times than any other entertainer".^[1]

"Squeeze This! A Cultural History of the Accordion in America" by Marion Jacobson says, "[Contino] continued with the same arrangement in his over forty appearances playing the song on the Ed Sullivan Show"^[2]

Evidence against 48 appearances[edit]

IMDB lists only 13 appearances on the Ed Sullivan show^[3]

"Television Variety Shows: Histories and Episode Guides to 57 Programs" by David M. Inman lists 16 entries for Dick Contino when searched via Google Books^[4]

SOFA Entertainment (the current owners of the Ed Sullivan Show) said they could only find "14 or 15 in our records" in my personal communication with them. Although they admit "it's possible maybe he played with the orchestra" which they wouldn't be able to tabulate.

Recommendation[edit]

I recommend that the statement that he appeared "a record" number of times should be removed because is not supported by enumerations of appearances.

I recommend that the sentence be changed to: "He appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show over a dozen times". Perhaps the book by David Inman and IMDB could both be sources?
