Graffiti artist[edit]

Was Michael Stewart well-known in the graffiti world at the time? I can't locate any photos of his pieces online and can't really get a handle on how big or small he was in the scene. I don't even know what name/tag he wrote under. Is this a case of a guy who's most notable because of how he died? Wikipedia lists him as a "Graffiti artist," but was Stewart a notable artist? Basquiat famously did a tribute piece to him, but did Basquiat know Stewart before his name made headlines? It's unclear how regarded he was as a writer, or if he became more a figure because of how his death put a spotlight on the NYPD's war on graffiti. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.46.159.170 (talk) 18:01, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Micheal Stewart was not well known. There is an incredible amount of bias in the current article that leaves out well known details, such as the Coroner's dishonesty in prior police cases involving deaths, the mysterious disappearance of the cocaine possession charge, the mysterious appearance of blood alcohol and the fact that the official story changed 4 times. He was not a graffiti artist the sense that he was skilled, he was a young man with a marker pen. This was a historic racially motivated beatdown that went wrong. It also did not take 11 officers to deal with a 135 pound boy. Also note that this is a landmark case in the eyes of many black scholars as it rekindled the civil unrest and crime caused by government policy (see the criticism section of the wiki page on Robert Moses) given to the south Bronx area during the 70s. That area did not experience 'white flight' in the typical sense. Untitled[edit]

I think this article is going to need some significant touching-up. It seems extremely biased against the Police involved in the case, and the repeated linking of "graffiti" and "art" seems to be an attempt to imply that Mr. Stewart's vandalism was justified. If anyone is planning on doing any significant work on the article, I think a few more details from the perspective of involved Policemen and less glorifying of the graffiti is in order. Renaming of the article[edit]
