Blackbeard[edit]

The story about Blackbeard marooning sailors on the island is almost certainly apocryphal. A Google Books search of the island name + Blackbeard comes up empty when restricted to 19th century books or earlier. It's only in the 20th century that any books mention the story, and it's always with qualifiers like "It's been said..." or "According to legend.." etc.. and if course there is never an authoritative source referenced. If the story had any basis in reality there would be sources available from the 18th century. Pirate legends are legion, and this is just another example.
