Early life chronology problem

It says here that Dave Grohl started playing with a punk band ("Midtown") in 1981, yet in 1982 his cousin Tracy "introduced them to punk rock." This doesn't make sense. Can someone straighten this out? PMsfo (talk) 07:30, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Title of "Sir".

In Rolling Stone Issue #1073, March 2009, the magazine identifies Grohl as Sir Dave Grohl, and in a picture of him and Paul McCartney, the caption reads "Sirs Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney" something something. Should this be added? If so, please do. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.28.21.39 (talk) 21:00, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm going to assume that that was a jokey reference; I don't believe Grohl has been knighted. ScarianCall me Pat! 21:02, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
Its junk. A month ago...exactly a month ago, curiously...another user tried to insert this into the article, based on this Rolling Stone article, which recounted Grohl's "knighting" at a medieval dinner theatre, held for his 40th birthday. Tarc (talk) 21:56, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
Dave Grohl CANNOT be knighted...he has no British connections...tsunamishadow (talk) 15:13, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

dave was voted best rock guitarist in 2003

dave was voted best rock guitarist in 2003, shouldnt that be in the article somewhere? And who is the blond he pulled up on stage and dedicated the rest of the night to? Angel something? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Batmanisnice (talkcontribs) 14:15, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Did you notice?

I suppose nobody noticed, that (although it was done improperly, and so didn't show) someone had Dave Grohl slated for death in the infobox in December, 2009? It's been there some time, and now fixed. Just an eye-opener. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 16:05, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Toronto pic

I'm seeing too many artist pics where the backdrop is Toronto. It's as if there is some 'pro-toronto' conspiracy going on in Wikipedia (yes, that is a deliberate miniscule of the 't'). Especially the "header pics' (ie, the top-right corner, which are the most viewed pics in a Wikipedia article). And who is this woman from Canada who supposedly is "up there" as far was Wikipedia editors is concerned, and is supposedly advocating for Canada, but really is just advocating for Southern Ontario, and specifically, Toronto?

Believe or not (and I know this may be hard to believe) there actually are other places in Canada besides Toronto. Yes, I know, it's quite a shock to learn that. Hey, I'm as shocked as you are (get-me).

And I'm sure Dave Grohl has actually performed in other places in Canada; so a Canadian-based pic of him could've been used in this article that was: "N.I.T." (ie, "not-in-toronto").

As an example, I'm sure that, at least once in the past 20 years, Dave Grohl has performed 90 minutes north of his hometown ... in Vancouver.
--Atikokan (talk) 14:02, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

I have no idea about this pro-Toronto conspiracy that you seem to be getting worked up about, but looking through the pics on wikimedia, the one at the top of the article is simply the best one. Perhaps there's a good photographer in Toronto who is generous about sharing their work on wiki? danno 19:17, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Harlingtox A.D.

There is no mention of the Harlingtox AD project here, why?

Re: Associated acts

Them Crooked Vultures is a one off just like every other Dave Grohl one-off act. What about Queens of the Stone Age? What about Probot? What about Juliette and the Licks? He was only in those groups for a short while and never joined them again. I think we should remove it for now and, if they make another record and/or do a full tour together again, we can add them back if the situation changes. ScarianCall me Pat! 06:22, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

The poor guy has the problem that everything he touches turns to gold. His association to Queens of the Stone Age might have been a one off session, but it resulted in a number one hit and a notable music video that he also appeared in. Them Crooked Vultures was a tour that was performing as recently as a month ago. And yes, Probot could probably also qualify as an associated act. These are more significant bands than just something he would have appeared in as a session musician. He puts his name on them and they become significant (notable in WP terms). A responsible encyclopedic article about him, or even an Infobox should not ignore these, even at the expense of ignoring a hidden notation.Trackinfo (talk) 15:05, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
But the problem is, where does it end? He's probably recorded with dozens of artists over the years, should we all put them in? Re: WikiProject Queens of the Stone Age single and vid: That's besides the point, he recorded the material but only toured for about a quarter of the support tour. Regarding the No One Knows video, he also shot a video with Eagles of Death Metal, should we add them too? Probot is probably going to be a one-off because it was a tribute to Grohl's love of metal; more likely they'll never ever tour because the singer's are getting past it.
Really it's so difficult to add arbitrary values to what should and should not be included because it just ends up being more and more biased and full of opinion.
The whole thing about just having bands he was/is a full time member of is kind of like how we're dealing genres nowadays; the umbrella term seems to solve most, if not all problems, and I really think we should wait until we see what happens with Them Crooked Vultures. Especially when he's returning to the Foo Fighters full time in September. ScarianCall me Pat! 10:32, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Would WikiProject Queens of the Stone Age be allowed in, he did do a full album and tour with them. I know it's a "one off" but it's a pretty big "one off". The Madras (talk) 14:52, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Associated Acts

Grohl played drums for the entire soundtrack for the Tenacious D movie, as well as provided vocals on at least one of the songs. I'm pretty sure he collaborates with them at other times. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TheTorminator (talkcontribs) 13:05, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

"... including the hardcore punk band Scream."

Wha?? While Scream may have started out as a hardcore band, anything after their first disc is nothing of the sort, even the first one is debatable. By the time Grohl joined they were playing a pastiche of punk, metal, reggae, and so on. I dare anyone to call No More Censorship a hardcore album. Hairhorn (talk) 20:43, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Dave Grohl played drums with L7

There is footage online where you can see Dave playing drums with L7. Wouldn't it be nice if something was mentioned in the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.195.125.117 (talk) 00:27, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Supported with a written source declaring this, you're very much free to add that information in yourself, my friend. Honestly, I would do it myself but I'm not sure how long my return will be. ScarianCall me Pat! 21:44, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Vandalism!

Dave did not attend Jefferson his freshmen and sophomore years, but Bishop Ireton. I know, because I was his classmate and advisory mate here. I changed it a couple years ago and someone changed it back. I am not going to change it again. This information on high school is correct. He, of course, used marijuana here at Ireton (not on campus to my knowledge).

Dave Grohl is on Slash's solo album

Slash has announced via Twitter (Sept. 20) that Dave Grohl is recording a track for his solo album, Slash & Friends. http://twitter.com/slashhudson 83.40.106.19 (talk) 18:35, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Personally, I think it's not a good idea to mention anything slated for the future. I keep finding articles that are out of date. An example, in 2009 would be an article saying, "John Q. Public is currently negotiating a new album slated for sometime around 2006." Do you see the problem? It drives me insane.. I'll be just coming through to add a photo and infobox, and yet, I can't ignore something so blatantly incorrect as that. I have to sit down, look through the references and try to find where this information came from, (if it's even referenced), add it, and fix the wording, when I have other things on my agenda. Please, keep that kind of info somewhere else: your sandbox, the talk page, but not on an article that people read for information. Oh, by the way, I hope the new photo in the infobox from this year (2009) is to your liking! Thank you. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 23:16, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm not a wiki member but I took the liberty to add a little snippet of a mention about the slash album. If someone would like to go ahead do all the fancy liking and citing of a good source, it would be much obliged. As a fan of both musicians I thought its only far to update the page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.246.132.147 (talk) 02:39, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Mastodon

Dave Grohl is NOT going to be on the new Mastodon album, I posted a link stating that on the discussion page of that album. I'm removing that statement. Chrlyon (talk) 11:57, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Give me a break. Correction?

This probably shouldn't be part of the article: "Grohl was charged with the killing of his former bandmate in early 1995, and pleaded guilty." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.186.31.38 (talk) 03:28, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

What you were seeing is called vandalism. It is common Wikipedia and common on this article. Fortunately there are people who watch the articles and remove it quickly, just not quickly enough for some people to accidentally see it. That is the nature of wikipedia. Here's the easy way to see if something is credible. Look for a source to have reported something, particularly something as defaming as this might be. If there is no reliable source repeating the story, it really doesn't belong here. Trackinfo (talk) 06:22, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Nirvana in the lede

Is there any fathomable reason why the lede mentions insignificant side projects, while a reader is half-way through the prose before they're provided with the small tidbit of information that Grohl was a member of the most influencial bands of the 1990s? Why isn't Nirvana mentioned explicitly in the lede? Achowat (talk) 12:53, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Scream

This statement is confusing:While playing in Scream, Grohl became a fan of Melvins and eventually befriended the band. During a 1990 tour stop on the west coast, The Melvins' Buzz Osborne took a couple of his friends, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, to see the band.[16] Which band, Scream? The link has expired so I can't check what it should be. Madgenberyl (talk) 00:03, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

12-12-12 Concert

I mistakingly forgot to add an edit summary, but thought I'd let you all know that I added Grohl's "reunion" with Nirvana to the additional projects section. The so-called reunion with McCartney standing in as Kurt Cobain was certainly controversial, but I didn't mention anything about the controversy. There are sources that show there was quite an outcry from fans [1], but I tried to maintain neutrality and omitted this entirely. The 12-12-12 article says nothing of this either. Anyway, feel free to improve the language of what I added. To say the least this was a big moment for Grohl and I'm honestly quite surprised that no one had already added this to the article. Thanks — MusikAnimal talk 02:35, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Help improve to GA

If anyone has been watching this article, you'll notice how I've been trying to find references for the vast uncited material. Wanted to formally say that my goal, as a member of the Alternative music WikiProject, is to help promote this article to Good Article status. Fortunately, much of the material already present appears to be accurate from my research, just lacking in citations. Furthermore, as a biography of a prolific musician, this article will require careful adherence to specific guidelines, any new contributors should read this over. Dave Grohl is the man, this goal of mine is for his fans, for me. Help make it happen. Cheers — MusikAnimal talk 00:08, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

Courtney Love

Courtney Love has accused him of being sexual with her daughter as well as accusing him of implying Kurt wrote all of Hole's songs. I think these horrible accusations should be added to the article to show the tension between Grohl and Love. That crazy bitch... --Mrmoustache14 (talk) 00:09, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Freak Baby

Freak Baby should have its own page. Freak Baby's original members were: Ronan Chris Murphy (vocals), Bryant Mason (guitar), Brian Samuels (bass), Scott Frey (drums), and Phoebus Spiliotopoulos (guitar). Ronan, Scott, and Phoebus left the band to start the Last Laugh and were replaced by Chris Page (vocals), David Smith (drums), and Dave Grohl (guitar). Sometime after that incarnation of the band, the group realized that Dave was a fantastic drummer and proceeded to relieve Brian of his bass playing duties to put David Smith on bass and Dave Grohl on drums. Thus, the band Mission Impossible was formed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Phoebuss (talkcontribs) 23:04, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

I'm a fan of the idea, but after doing some searching I'm doubting they meet the notability guideline, see WP:BAND. — MusikAnimal talk 03:48, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Personal Life - Politics

I don't doubt that Dave leans left. He grew up in the DC area, he has working class roots, and has occasionally supported one issue or another. But declaring Dave Grohl a "Democrat" is a little much, and here's why: part of the ethos Dave has had since Nirvana is to put music before politics. Kurt Cobain undoubtedly leaned left as well, but they all agreed that their music was more important. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.111.196.24 (talk) 03:18, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

I don't think the wording implies he puts politics before music at all. It merely notes of his support for Obama and that he performed at the convention. — MusikAnimal talk 14:57, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

Genres

@Nirvanafan55: I accidentally hit enter before I could type my edit summary, but I wanted to question the addition of "country" to the genre list. I also think we should try to keep it fairly concise and refrain from adding genres Grohl is not normally known for. — MusikAnimal talk 19:46, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Bass guitar should be added as an instrument

Dave played bass on the first Foo Fighters album, he also played bass multiple times live with other musicians (e.g. when he performed Hanging Tree). I propose we add bass guitar to his instrument list. --Mr Serious Guy (talk) 22:09, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

Instruments

I'm feeling a sense of deja vu, but @Mlpearc: I really think "drums" should go in, as though youngsters know him as the Foo Fighters' leader, for older chaps he will be the man who comes in like a herd of elephants four bars into "Smells Like Teen Spirit". [2], [3] Can we have both, please? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:10, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Really ? you want to add Drums to list of "primary instruments" because he's so well know as a drummer on "one" song ? This is why the guideline is in place. I oppose the addition. Mlpearc (open channel) 18:18, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
No, that's just an example. He's well known as a drummer for every Nirvana track, guest appearances for Queens of the Stone Age, the article has two pictures of him drumming .... here is a good source for following guidelines. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:27, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
Personal attacks are not appreciated. Mlpearc (open channel) 18:47, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
Indeed they are not, so it's a good thing we're talking about content, isn't it? ;-) However, what would be a better focus, as MusikAnimal describes above, is pulling out some more book sources like the two I grabbed above, and citing some of the unsourced content in the article, which is really worth having a look at. It's particularly galling that I just looked at a bunch of book sources, credited to other people, that are clear copyvios of the content here. Harrumph. Infobox instruments

There has been recent disagreement about what instruments to include in the infobox. I suggest "guitar, drums, vocals". He spent some years as the drummer for Nirvana. He played guitar and provided lead vocals for Foo Fighters. Other instruments may be secondary, but certainly those three are predominantly what he is known for. Willondon (talk) 13:40, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

Only primary instruments are listed in the infobox, secondary instruments are brought up in the article body per Template:Infobox musical artist#instrument. Grohl in mainly known as a guitarist and drummer (forgot about Nirvana). - FlightTime (open channel) 13:56, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
Understood. I can see where keyboards and bass are secondary instruments for him. But is he notable as a vocalist for his work with Foo Fighters? Willondon (talk) 14:21, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

@FlightTime: Why can't vocals be mentioned? He is the lead singer of Foo Fighters and not having it there will just cause confusion and take away from the article. I can see why you removed keyboard and bass, he isn't as well known for playing them. But he is well know for being the lead singer of Foo Fighters. Removing the vocals from the infobox doesn't help the article, it just takes away important information. Under occupations he is listed as a SINGER. Vocals have been under the instruments section for a long time and where removed for no good reason. They should be added back. He sings for a band so it is necessary to mention this. I see you were discussing this with @Willondon:. This should have been been discussed before you went ahead and removed vocals. I can see this removal becoming controversial and leading to more edit wars. Bowling is life (talk) 02:04, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

I agree. The argument that "He has played guitar and drums for many bands, he's onlt sang for one = secondary." [4] doesn't hold much weight, in my opinion, because the one band referred to has been producing music for over twenty years now, with nine studio albums (four of them winning Grammy Award for Best Rock Album), and selling over 12 million copies in the U.S. (That's according to Wikipedia at Foo Fighters, so take it with a grain of salt.) Surely that means his work with vocals is far from secondary... well, one level up, anyway. Willondon (talk) 02:16, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
Fine. - FlightTime (open channel) 02:23, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
What? Can it be added back? Bowling is life (talk) 02:27, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
Just did it. Willondon (talk) 02:29, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Clarification

In the first paragraph, specifically collaboration with Queens of the stone age, it is mentioned that he has worked with them in the "past decade" which can cause some confusion. I suggest to clarify use the actual date or write the which decade he worked with them.

The article states that Grohl contemplated joining GWAR at approximately the same time he joined Nirvana, But the source cited actually disproves this claim. Dave and Louise

This is from Posts' wiki page: In the late 1990s, Post was in a relationship with Foo Fighters' leader and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. Grohl has said that the Foo Fighters song "Everlong" (on which Post sang backing vocals, recorded over a telephone line from Chicago to Los Angeles) is about Post. Following their break-up, Post, during an inebriated performance in Melbourne in 1997, stated that Grohl had cheated on her with Winona Ryder; this was later believed to be referenced in Veruca Salt's song "Disconnected", which contains the lyrics: "It's kind of scary when your lover leaves you for a movie star". In 2006, Post stated: "It was a private relationship, but it got so much publicity. I didn't mean for it to happen. I'm friends with him now.

I am inclined to include some of that into dave's personla life section. EnveeNV (talk) 05:23, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

The bare-bones version which is most appropriate would be that Grohl dated Louise Post and then Winona Ryder in 1997. Binksternet (talk) 05:39, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
I wanted to document the fact that he seems to be a serial philanderer. That section on his personal life as far as women is concerned is clean with no mentioning of the self confessed infidelitites. Post would not be the first as he cheated on his wife as well. This guardian article also backs this up. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2007/sep/14/popandrock.foofighters
Hey, i like the guy and listen to his music but the truth has to be written and i dont like the fact that he is so clean when it comes to the women of his life.
Up until weinberger went to court all the women had were accusations. Now look at weinberger. Convicted and in jail. EnveeNV (talk) 16:19, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
It's not illegal for Grohl to have sex with willing partners. Your crusade against Grohl isn't supported by the literature, not even the Guardian article you pointed to. If you persist in your crusade you will be reverted by many other editors because it doesn't accurately summarize the literature about him. Misrepresenting him in this way would be a violation of WP:BLP and a serious matter. Binksternet (talk) 16:51, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Virginia Grohl Passed Away

Hi, I just read that Dave Grohl's mother, Virginia passed away in late July. I have a source for it, but I don't know if it's considered a reliable one. Should I add it to the article? It lists Dave's father's death under his personal life section. ~[thehappyspaceman]talkstalkblock 20:17, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

I still don't feel like there is enough proof 60.242.248.141 (talk) 06:38, 18 May 2023 (UTC)
Here are some additional sources. It appears as though they've been quiet about it, but she has passed. ~[thehappyspaceman]talkstalkblock 06:27, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
It's already mentioned in the 2015-present section: The album is dedicated to Hawkins and Grohl's mother, Virginia, both of whom died in 2022. Schazjmd (talk) 14:56, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
Perfect, thanks! That line wasn't in the article when I wrote this post, but that works. ~[thehappyspaceman]talkstalkblock 18:07, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
