Distance from Perth[edit]

I suppose the distance from Perth is given via Dava because Bradshaw presented it thus- but it's a little difficult these days to travel by train from Perth via Dava and Forres to Dalcross. A distance of 6 and three quarter miles from Inverness is, however, also given in the 1922 Bradshaw, which added to the 118 miles from Perth to Inverness via Aviemore and Carr Bridge would be 124 and three quarters, though there's no way of getting off at the old site. The near-insane proposal to establish a halt- allegedly to serve the airport, all of whose administrative buildings can only be reached from the proposed site expensively by taxi or shuttle bus - has had a long life, while the airport has steadily and sensibly simply expanded its parking areas. Its purpose was - and is- simply to provide Highland Council with an excuse not to improve the B9039, the main road access to the airport from Inverness, which it would have to do at its own cost. Neither Network Rail nor Transport Scotland need to do any more than play along.Delahays (talk) 11:03, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's not Bradshaw which counts, but the official survey of the railway, still indicated by quarter-mile posts and marked on lineside structures (many of these, such as stations, junctions, level crossings, etc. are given in Yonge). Such surveys were made at the time of opening, and on occasion since; but were costly, so a railway would not normally be re-surveyed when lines were closed. The Inverness-Aberdeen route has five different mileage systems:
Point Distance Measured from
Inverness 118 miles 3 chains Perth via Carr Bridge
Milburn Junction 117 mi 20 ch
143 mi 20 ch Perth via Dava
Forres 119 mi 26 ch
0 mi 0 ch Forres
Keith Junction 30 mi 40 ch
53 mi 5 ch Aberdeen Waterloo
Kittybrewster 1 mi 59 ch
1 mi 53 ch Aberdeen Joint
Aberdeen Joint 0 mi 0 ch

Many thanks. I stand corrected. All the same, though I admit I wasn't there at the time, the Beeching closure doesn't seem to have altered the position of the station itself, and nor have Highland planners so far changed the position of Inverness station. Unfortunately another Beeching closure also made it impossible to reach Dalcross by rail through Dava and Forres. Your table doesn't throw much light on any realistic current distance between Perth and Dalcross by any viable route. I suspect Bradshaw used the survey distances, in any case. I continue to propose the amendment. But I shall check the nearest milepost when I am next at Dalcross, before I make itDelahays (talk) 11:18, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's a question of verifiability. Noting down a quarter-mile post counts as original research, whereas a figure sourced from a published book should meet the policy on verifiability. Then there is accuracy: Bradshaw gave distances to the nearest quarter mile, whereas Yonge gives distances to the nearest chain - 20 times more accurate. Going back to the mileposts: if you take a trip from Inverness to Nairn, you should find that the first milepost that you pass is 118, followed by 117+34, 117+12 then 143, 142+34 and so on down to 129; I rather suspect that the one closest to Dalcross (west of the level crossing) will show 137+14 - do upload a photo if it isn't. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:02, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article name[edit]

This is opening in a couple of weeks - should it now be called Inverness Airport? Crookesmoor (talk) 15:26, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing this out. As the original station was called Dalcross, a new article should be made, rather than moving this one. Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 16:27, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
New article now live at Inverness Airport railway station, although granted it doesn't have a picture Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 16:56, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense - cheers Crookesmoor (talk) 09:23, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

On the Aberdeen to Inverness Line route template, as Inverness Airport station is on a different station site to that of the former Dalcross station site, should an entry of Inverness Airport station be added to that route line template?
