The History section was a lightly-edited version of the history page on the Concord University website [1]

These two sentences, for example, appear verbatim on that page. (I'm not quoting the rest of them, so as not to repeat the copyvio here.)

Captain James Harvey French was the first principal, and he served until his death in 1891.

Due to confusion with another West Virginia post office in Hampshire County called "Concord", the name of the town was changed to "Athens", an obvious choice of the old Greek city for a community that was a center of learning. But the school kept "Concord" as its name.

Leading Programs

What standards were used to determine the "Leading Programs" at CU? Some of the programs listed are generally regarded by faculty and students as having the worst academic qualities on this campus: poor retention and graduation, under-qualified faculty (in terms of degrees, research and publication, and/or quality of teaching), lack of resources, length of time since last major overhaul, etc. Conversely, a number of outstanding academic programs are not listed.

Accreditation, faculty accomplishment, retention and graduation, physical resources, evidence of ongoing improvement, etc., are standards that are generally used to determine "leading" status. These standards really should be used here, and there ought to be an explanation as to how and why the programs were selected.

Readers should understand that there were many problems with how academics at this university were handled by the previous university administration, and most of these problems were documented by accreditation agencies and state oversight institutions. The current "list" reflects a number of those problems. (To be fair, the current administration is aware of those issues and seems to be moving to correct many of them.) Future: "interfaith chapel"

The "interfaith chapel", currently under construction on this campus, is another controversial decision of the previous CU administration. The most substantive issue raised is why a public university is building a religious facility on campus, when there are many denominational religious facilities nearby. Further, this ostensibly private and religious facility is being supported by millions of dollars of bridge loans from state and campus funds intended for campus operating costs, facilities capitalization, and academic development (as indicated in the public records of the CU Faculty Senate), and is seriously impacting the ability of CU to achieve its higher education obligations.

The current administration, reacting to intense criticism on the state and campus levels, has changed the role of this facility substantially. While there will be an interfaith chapel within the building, the purposes of this facility have been redefined to support a number of academic and research programs. These include a regional tourism center, another center for the study of faith and service in a non-profit environment, a related program in academic religious studies attached to the present history and philosophy program, a civic responsibilities studies program attached to the Bonner Scholars program, and facilities for research into retention and graduation issues on-campus.
