Meals on Wheels[edit]

Overall article[edit]

Community Spirit[edit]

Community spirit involves people within the same community uniting together to work towards building and maintaining a better community. Improvements on community can be fulfilled by volunteering on community projects or acting on gestures of goodwill. [1] Community Spirit can be describe as positive contributions from society to the meet the needs of their community. The needs of a community can be describe as the requirements needed to maintain a stable society. Community spirit requires the society to work together on social contributions, for example, removing debris of the streets or public parks effects the community as a whole. According to Amitai Etzioni, community spirit is a unity of people in society which uphold and share similar values and resources. [2] Functionalism in sociology is the understanding that society can achieve and maintain a state of balance and social equilibrium when working together as a whole through a system of interconnected parts. Each community has their several social institutions, including family, religion, educational, political and economic institutions which work together to maintain our community. All social institutions correlate and work together as important functions in society. For example, education serves as a way to educate children in communities. Children are taught values and morals through religion and gain knowledge and skills through pubic schools. [3]

Community spirit can also be defined as pride within a community. Community spirit can be displayed in forms of customized apparel. For example, the community logo can be placed on T-shirts, baseball caps, and/ or bumper stickers. Communities can also display spirit by supporting local charities and schools. [4] Community newspapers display spirit in articles relating to local volunteering, local charities, and announce a variety of community topics. For example, Miami Community Newspapers is a local publication in Miami-Dade_County,_Florida. This publication distributes local newspapers in 14 communities in the region of South Florida. [5] The community’s biweekly newspaper publishes a variation of columns, including articles on education,[6] fundraisers[7] and multiculturalism[8]. Community media emphasizes on the local communities interest and showcases community news.
