Spelling of last name[edit]

So please clarify: Was it spelled "Garamont" or "Garamondt"? Just curious —Xanderer 02:11, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If the case of Mansard/Mansart (See Mansard roof) is a clue, then it must have been "Garamont" but I leave it to French editors to say for sure. --DThomsen8 (talk) 13:06, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Claude Garamont took the latin surname of Garamondus, itʼs why his fonts are called Garamond. I suggest to rename this article to Claude Garamont. Confer the website of the French Culture office : http://www.garamond.culture.fr/ Captain frakas (talk) 13:11, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I can't find any indication he used "Garamondus" but he did use the Latin name "Garamontius". All of his publications, letters, and his will, used Garamont. __Elaqueate (talk) 11:57, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has had the unsourced contention that Garamont used "Garamondus" for so long that the wording has creeped into dozens of third party uses (Ask.com, type foundry who have lifted the Wikipedia text). Factual error[edit]

In the first paragraph, it is claimed that Garamond "is credited with the introduction of the apostrophe, the accent and the cedilla to the French language." This is completely incorrect: Geoffrey Tory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoffroy_Tory) is the person credited for bringing those marks to the French language; however, Garamond was an assistant to Tory. Hi ZH92,It looks like you have a lot of good information for his career, maybe try focusing on getting information on his education or what made them get into the typography field. Also, try finding images that will show what the typefaces look like that he has created, it would give some life to the page. Looking good! Keep up the good work! Date of birth[edit]

I've seen a variety of sources for this which make me suspect some historians are unsure or possibly disagree on how to interpret sources. Encyclopaedia Britannica says 1499 exactly. The French government says 1510 is about right. 1480 also looks very unlikely according to this report of his will on a French government website - that would mean he died aged 81, but his mother outlived him! I've split the difference and made it c. 1505 unless someone else has a well-informed source. Blythwood (talk) 09:26, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Info on Garamond's book designs requested[edit]
