The Clarence Hotel Discussion[edit]

The Clarence is at 6-8 Wellington Quay, Dublin 2. It was built in 1852 and purchased by Bono and the Edge in 1992. It now has 49 rooms and suites. The cheapest rooms are a bit over 100 Euros per night, which is about US $150. Not bad. The penthouse suite is over 1000 Euros per night. The main restaurant, the Tea Room, is now being renovated. There is another restaurant in operation, the Study Cafe. Valet parking is available at 25 Euros per night. I read the website and some newspaper articles. It is 6 stories high.

They have 2 additional partners. One partner is developer Paddy McKillen. For about 5 years they have been planning a MAJOR expansion, which would mean gutting several adjoining historic buildings, leaving just the facades. Everything else would be new. Budget projected at US $237.2 million. There has been strong opposition from historic preservation groups, but support from some city agencies. The project was "on hold" for several years but has been revised. The architect is Norman Foster.

The hotel lost money during the worst recession years, but is now profitable. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:42, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is the restaurant relevant enough to have an article? What does this mean: It is 6 stories high. What else can I add to the article? see: User:Miss Bono/Clarence Hotel. I am using Hilton_San_Diego_Bayfront as format reference Ms.Bono(zootalk) 19:45, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Six stories means six levels, or six floors. I would just have a restaurant section of the main article for now. They are hiring world class chefs. Maybe the restaurant will become more notable after it re-opens. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:49, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
hehe, sorry I was thinking about a restaurant cuz I am hungry. I meant the hotel :) Ms.Bono(zootalk) 19:56, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Can you find some free picture of the Hotel? Ms.Bono(zootalk) 20:05, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
From Pjoef

To Cullen328 and Pjoef... here's the discussion :)

The following is taken from the press page of its website:

Built in 1852, The Clarence had last been refurbished during the late Thirties in the Arts & Crafts style originating from when the hotel was first built.

By the Seventies, while still retaining a sense of Old World charm and dignity, it was past its prime. At the same time, the ranks of the original clientele, once drawn primarily from the clergy, judiciary and visitors from the provinces, were swelled by the artists, musicians, writers and designers who began to make the Temple Bar area their own.

Among the regulars were two members of the rock group U2, Bono & The Edge, whose fond recollections of their youthful haunt led them to assemble a consortium of Irish investors and purchased the hotel in 1992 with a view to restoring it to the former glory of this Dublin city hotel.

To realise their vision, the owners assembled a team of professionals from both Ireland and abroad. The result of their collaboration, guided by the owners' directive that the design respect the country's quintessential Irish heritage and character.

A hotel like The Clarence is inevitably a personal vision, and for the owners, The Clarence is where they would choose to stay when visiting Dublin - a hotel in Temple Bar that is at once simple but elegant, unpretentious but luxurious, that is modern but also embodies the best of traditional Irish hospitality.

Got it and found some things, I'll be checking them out right now :) Ms.Bono(zootalk) 14:44, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The following (or part of it) is what I've been able to find out. There is little about its original construction (1852), architect[s] and style[s], and about its use (see City Hall, Dublin). It looks like it was rebuilt or restyled in 1939 (see below), but there is a black hole from the 1940s until the 1990s. From the 1990s onwards, there are enough news. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 08:31, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Clarence and F. Lawless[edit]

(Extract important stuffs) In 1991 he befriended U2 lead singer Bono after meeting him during a plane journey. The following year he visited Bono in Dublin and stayed overnight in a hotel called The Clarence on the banks of the River Liffey . After discovering the hotel was up for sale he suggested to Bono that buying and refurbishing a hotel in such a prime location might be a good investment. The following year Bono purchased the hotel with U2 guitarist The Edge.[1] The hotel was completely refurbished and is now a 5 star boutique establishment frequented by many A-list celebrities. Despite its fame the hotel lost €1.6M In 2009.[2] Ms.Bono(zootalk) 14:48, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To me, most of this material seems inappropriate for an article about a hotel. I don't think that we can source puffery about the lines and the furniture to a website like hotels.com, which is neither independent nor relaible about anything that can be construed as promotional. And party guest lists are not appropriate. Mentioning the dance club is probably OK, but we should find a better source than the brief directory listing in the New York Times. Agree. What about Bob hewson's party?? Ms.Bono(zootalk) 19:44, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Bono had a birthday party for his sick father at the Clarence Hotel. A few months later, his father died. Why is that worthy of mention in an encyclopedia article about a hotel? Certainly, the death of his father can be mentioned in Bono's biography. But the party is trivial, in my opinion. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:02, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
