Name Change[edit]

Christ University is no longer called as such. It is now known as Christ (deemed to be university). Please change the title.

Exactly, it was an actual controversy and involved legal issues, yet the title still remains, it is deceiving the general public Idk2035 (talk) 17:32, 28 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Christ UniversityChrist (Deemed to be University) – The university's website https://christuniversity.in/ uses the new name. Another editor feels that using the new name would go against naming policy. Two previous moves to the new name have been reversed. Under Indian law, a deemed university has most of the privileges of being a full-fledged university without actually being one, so I think the distinction is a valid one. • I strongly support the change as the name of the institute has been changed from Christ University to Christ (Deemed to be a University). Under Indian law, a deemed university has most of the privileges of being a full-fledged university without actually being one, so I think the distinction is a valid one. The below two articles, would support the statement.

@Tobinkoshy: How about you write your opinion in your own words instead of copy-pasting the nom's statement from above?  LeoFrank  Talk 15:13, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@LeoFrank: I have said my opinion about the change in name of the institute. The logo of the institute has changed in all places where it was used from the website, bus, diaries, certificates etc. This came into effect from November, 2017. The management has requested all it's staff, students and officials to use CHRIST (Deemed to be a University) from then on in all forms of communication, design's etc. Tobinkoshy Talk 14:09, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. Wikipedia doesn't lead, Wikipedia follows, so the article should not be moved until after a clear majority of English language media and sources have switched to the new name. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 14:53, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME - No one in a million years will refer to this university as "Christ (Deemed to be University)" ..... –Davey2010Talk 17:25, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment. The University Grants Commission and leading Indian English-language newspapers use the new name, as well as the university itself. The logo has been changed to remove the word university. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 23:56, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      • My apologies I should've been more clear - I meant it wouldn't be referred to as such in conversations and the alike however judging by this I'd say that opinion would be considered moot, Well I'd support years down the line when it becomes more known (well more known than now). –Davey2010Talk 00:34, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. Since this UGC directive causing all deemed to be universities to remove the "university" from the name, I have been reverting multiple such moves. In 90% of the cases, the institutes remains called "university" for years. See also Maharishi Markandeshwar University, Mullana, Yenepoya University and many more. Some cases are in the grey area such as Karunya university, which might be argued both ways, but this one is a clear cut, no one calls it "Christ (Deemed to be University)" --Muhandes (talk) 13:10, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME, and the suggested new title being awkward and approaching an NPOV violation. power~enwiki (π, ν) 01:37, 23 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Abhishek, on the Christ University page edit summary you had left two comments, "irrelevant; survey is not conducted by an independent entity which has been authorised to. More like an opinion of a news portal/site" and "This article already reads like a fan boy page and yet you want to include rankings which one entity claims". To respond to the first, there are three different rankings and not one. All three are reputed rankings that are accepted by educational institutions and I haven't found any sources to show that they are "irrelevant" as you claim. Two, I have spent some time to remove the puffery throughout the article but still don't see the link between the previous puffery and the rankings. Constructive criticism are welcome here on the article talk page. Best! Vikram Vincent 09:17, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Abhishek So I found the diff where you deleted the rankings section with the summary "adverty stuff". I think you need to look at Academic_Ranking_of_World_Universities and see that rankings have been tracked for institutions over several years. You deleting this section in the past was wrong. If you feel there is something fundamentally wrong with Institutional rankings being displayed then that is a larger discussion. Vikram Vincent 14:05, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mysore state category[edit]

BrownHairedGirl Mysore State was a state within the Dominion and the later Republic of India from its formation in 1947, out of the territories of the Kingdom of Mysore, until 1956[1] with Bangalore as its capital. The state was considerably enlarged in 1956 when it became a linguistically homogeneous Kannada-speaking state[2] within the Union of India. It was subsequently renamed as the state of Karnataka. Please revert the category to either Bangalore or India. Mysore is factually wrong. Vikram Vincent 13:14, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Concerns about Removal of Controversial Content from Christ University's Wikipedia Page[edit]

Hello fellow editors,

I've observed that there appears to be a concerted effort, possibly by individuals associated with Christ University, to remove negative or controversial content from its Wikipedia page. Notably, the entire "Controversies" section, which included critical information about incidents such as student suicide due to sexual assault and allegations of sexual misconduct by university staff, has been deleted.

It is essential to maintain a balanced and comprehensive view of the university's history, including its controversies. These incidents, unfortunately part of the university's history, are well-documented in reliable sources and have had a significant impact on the institution's reputation and stakeholder relationships.

According to Wikipedia's guidelines, specifically WP:NPOV (Neutral Point of View) and WP:VERIFIABILITY, content that is notable and can be backed by reliable, secondary sources should be included in the article, provided it is written in a neutral tone. Moreover, WP:NOTCENSORED emphasizes that Wikipedia should not avoid presenting information due to its controversial nature or potential criticism.

Given these considerations, I propose that the deleted content be reviewed and, if it meets Wikipedia's standards for notability and verifiability, be reinstated to ensure the article provides a full and unbiased account of Christ University's history.

Would like to hear thoughts from other community members on this matter. PotatoCyborg (talk) 16:17, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Previous discussions about this subject can be found at [2] and [3], although these have been on a user talk page and having a discussion focused on content here would be preferable. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 10:01, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Based on the previous discussions linked above, I think asking for a third opinion may already be reasonable. There have been discussions between two users about this, and they have come to a standstill. I have added this to WP:3O now. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 10:36, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey ToBeFree,
Thank you very much for your work and for requesting a third opinion. I appreciate your assistance in addressing this issue.
Maybe you can also provide your opinion. Seeing your extensive contributions, you seem like a veteran editor, and I would like to get your perspective regarding the content removal on the Christ University page. Your insights would be very helpful in finding a consensus. PotatoCyborg (talk) 10:51, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for asking and the kind words. However, my only opinion, independent of the article/subject, is that material disputed among Wikipedians to the point of edit warring should usually only be (re-)added if a consensus for doing so has been found. This is more strict when statements about living people are involved (WP:BLPRESTORE) and less strict (or simply less urgent) about things unrelated to living persons. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 11:05, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Response to third opinion request:
Hi. After careful examination of the article's history and past discussions, I believe that most of the Controversies section should be removed. Based on my understanding of WP:NOTNEWS, minor incidents should not be included. Pretty much every incident mentioned in the section can be summarized like this: John Doe speaks against the school, the school responds, ... and that's it. No lasting effects. Secondly, to quote PotatoCyborg, According to Wikipedia's guidelines, specifically WP:NPOV (Neutral Point of View) ... provided it is written in a neutral tone. The article in its current state is not. Take the "Higher cut-off for female students" section as an example: the article currently states This decision was seen by many as a way to penalise female students for their academic achievements. Says who? The news story cited only gives examples of 4 parents, with no mention of 'penalise'. Therefore, I believe the Controversies section should not be included. I am also an uninvolved editor, responding to the request for people not involved to look at this (I had never even heard of this university until about 20 minutes ago). I agree with CanonNi above; while I think there's just enough meat to talk about some of the controversies with this university, the section is far too detailed and long, resulting in a lack of proportionality with the coverage. These events largely got very little coverage in sources -- at least the English sources I can read -- and the more serious ones should be more efficiently compressed into a smaller section. Stuff like a tenure issue and students protesting the dress code briefly being included gives this page a whiff of WP:COATRACK. A reader coming to this page would likely get the impression that the vast majority of the coverage of this uni is controversial things, and I don't see this as justified. So keep the section, but slash this down to brief mentions of the more serious things with citations. CoffeeCrumbs (talk) 13:09, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi CanonNi and CoffeeCrumbs,
Thank you for your thoughtful responses. Firstly, I want to clarify that I am not providing a third-party opinion but responding to the discussion.
I also agree with CoffeeCrumbs' suggestion to keep the section but condense it to brief mentions of the more serious events with proper citations.
Regarding CanonNi's point that the incidents can be summarized as "John Doe speaks against the school, the school responds, ... and that's it. No lasting effects," I must disagree. Some of these events do have lasting effects. For example, the 2013 student suicide attempt over faculty sexual misconduct and the 2006 student suicide, in which a student died, are significant incidents with lasting effects on the university community and the families involved. These events are notable and have been covered by reliable sources, fitting within Wikipedia's guidelines, including WP:NOTNEWS, which allows for the inclusion of events that have had a significant impact and lasting relevance.
However, I acknowledge that not all incidents may have long-term significance and agree that minor incidents could be shortened/excluded. PotatoCyborg (talk) 16:17, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi CanonNi,
Regarding the NPOV of the "Higher cut-off for female students" section. I believe there has been a misunderstanding. To clarify, the term "penalize" is directly taken from from this article. Additionally, The News Minute article discusses the discriminatory & illegal nature of setting higher cutoffs for girls was also originally added as a citation. I had originally added both of these citations when writing the content. You can verify this in the edit history. It appears that the citations may have been lost in the chaotic edit war.
I assure you that the content is Neutral Point of View (NPOV). I have included both sides of the argument and have not exaggerated any points. PotatoCyborg (talk) 17:42, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New Draft for Controversies Section[edit]

Here is a new draft: incidents without long-term significance removed and minor incidents shortened while maintaining NPOV. Dear editors, please add or remove content as you see fit, or suggest any further edits to improve this draft to align with the consensus of the talk page.PotatoCyborg (talk)

Controversies[edit]

Student Attempted Suicide over alleged Sexual Harassment by Faculty Member (2013)[edit]

In July 2013, a 19-year-old student at Christ University reportedly attempted suicide on campus, allegedly due to harassment by a National Cadet Corps (NCC) officer. The student's family filed a complaint, leading to the officer's arrest under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code. The university conducted an internal investigation in response to the incident.[1][2]

Sexual Harassment During Online Examination (2021)[edit]

In June 2021, a female student accused a proctor of inappropriate behavior during an online examination, sharing screenshots where the proctor addressed her as "baby." The incident gained significant attention on social media. The university formed a committee to investigate the matter, despite not receiving formal complaints from students.[3][4]

Student Protests and Allegations of Sexist Policies (2016)[edit]

In 2016, students at Christ University protested against the institution's strict regulations, including an 85% attendance requirement and a dress code perceived by some as sexist. The protests were partly sparked by the university's handling of attendance during a bus strike and the dismissal of a professor who questioned university policies.[5][6][7][8][9]

Higher Cut-off for Female Students (2019)[edit]

In May 2019, reports emerged that Christ University had set higher cut-off marks for female students applying to pre-university courses. The university stated that the decision aimed to balance gender representation, but some critics argued it penalized female students for their academic achievements.[10][11][12]
