I'm unfamiliar with military/navy article title naming conventions, but it strikes me that most navy ships are named with the acronym of the navy they belong to, then the name of the ship (e.g. USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) or HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08)). Shouldn't this article be called "PLAN Liaoning"? NickCT (talk) 20:46, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, it shouldn't. The full guideline on military/navy ship article titles is at WP:NCSHIP#Naming articles about military ships. Note that "USS" and "HMS" are actually Ship prefixes, not the acronym of the navies themselves, which would be "USN" and "RN" respectively. Hope that helps. - BilCat (talk) 21:00, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@BilCat: - Thanks for the relevant policy citation. I guess that policy is relatively clear and would suggest we shouldn't use a prefix here. Is sorta confusing what's meant by "official prefix" though. For instance, if the US only officially uses "USS" as the prefix for commissioned ships, why is USS Enterprise (CVN-65) a USS? NickCT (talk) 03:00, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's traditional to still refer to decommissioned ships as "USS", but I really don't know. You could ask at WT:SHIPS or WT:MILHIST. - BilCat (talk) 03:16, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It would feel better if all PRC PLAN ships were labelled as "PLAN ship xyz", like PLAN aircraft carrier Liaoning. This would also show the ships that are naval as separate from some random ship registered in China, as "Chinese ship xyz" is just that; Or "Chinese ship xyz" should be replaced by "Chinese naval ship xyz" when it is a naval ship (and for all other countries using this format). I will note post military use of demilitarized former warships, so there's also that distinction. We should note that reader facing content like page titles are not something that some statement of "Nation ship" means naval ship could convey to the readership, or in a searchbox. -- 65.94.170.207 (talk) 12:58, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense to me too IP. But as BilCat notes, there's a pretty explicit policy on this topic. If you want to suggest a policy change, the right place to do that is Wikipedia_talk:Naming_conventions_(ships). NickCT (talk) 19:00, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
