Translation of "Eclaireurs de France"[edit]

Seeing that my previous correction has been deleted, I will add this comment before correcting ther page again.

Despite it being present all over the net, probably because it appears on the Ig Nobel prizes page, the translation of "Eclaireurs de France" by "those who show the way" is completely faulty.

Etymologically, "Eclaireurs" would be "light-bringers". Its actual meaning in french is plainly "scout". Both in the military sense of the word and with the same meaning as "boy scouts" in english. The "Eclaireurs de France" is simply one of the french boy scouts associations.

Thought it would have been fun if it were accurate, such a mistranslation has no place here. Merely looking up at the word "eclaireur" in an english-french dictionnary will show that all the sites mentionning it are just repeating the same original mistake. I assume that a dictionnary will be considered a better reference than a website.

I hope that any reader wanting to revert again the article to a previous version will read this and at least explain his reasons if he's disagreeing with me.

pic[edit]

I'd personally like to see a picture of these cave paintings before they were erased.

erased paintings?[edit]

i think this entry is wrong, they erased ancient art? how is that good? sounds like an error. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.226.187.47 (talk) 18:06, 24 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

erased = true[edit]

It's no mistake, and was widely reported in the news at the time, that some members of the aforementioned scouting organization did indeed attempt to remove what they thought was graffiti, but was in fact ancient art. Who said there was anything good about that?

I also would like to see this article include, if available, before-and-after images (as similar in photographic aspects as can be found) depicting the artwork in its pre- and post-"cleaning" states. 96.229.171.153 (talk) 05:40, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
