Was Plaskett African-American[edit]

It is less than clear from the article is Plaskett was African-American. Considering the time and society she lived in, this would be a question that needs to be answered either yes or no. It clearly can be answered with enough study of sources.John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:55, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • She was at least black, per the sourcing of her obituary. Whether she was African-American depends in part of we use it as an ethnic or racial term. Is Colin Powell African-American? Is Mia Love the daughter of Haitian immigrants African-American? Although with Plaskett we lack clear statements about her mother's origin, so on her mother's side she may be multi-generational mainland US of African descent, so she may be in all possible ways ethnically African-American on her mother's side. It is also possible to argue that due to the nature of ethnic group formation, Powell and Love count as African-American because of the nature of their social and cultural formation in the US. I had to look up the name, but she is maybe more relevant today, but Winsome Sears some might think is another name to throw out. However, Winsome Sears is a different case since she was born in Jamaica, and did not come to the US until she was 6, while Love and Powell were born in the US to immigrants from Haiti and Jamaica respectively. Of course, Plaskett's father came from what is now the US Virgin Islands, but they became US territory about the time she was born and were Danish possessions when her father left.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:09, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
