Proposed deletion - reasons against[edit]

This is an important article as it is about one of only a handful of Gaelic Medium schools in Scotland. There are already articles about the other ones: Bun-sgoil Taobh na Pàirce, Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis, Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu. Each of these other schools are in cities and parents who prefer their children to not receive Gaelic Medium Education have not been affected by the existence of these schools. However, as the next phase of the expansion of Gaelic Medium provision in to seek to establish schools in the more traditional Gaelic areas - which tend to be more sparsely populated - parents who do not wish Gaelic provision for their children are claiming that their children's education is being adversely affected by the creation of new Gaelic Medium Schools. This article deals with the first school where a controversy of this sort is playing out. Portree used to have a single primary school within which some pupils received education through Gaelic, but all the children shared the facilities and shared English language events etc like assemblies. However the decision to build a new Gaelic medium School has - some people claim - divided the community. Half of pupils now attend a brad new Gaelic only facility while the other half are left behind in the older, half empty building. This article - which is still only a stub - will expand to capture how things develop. Will the English Medium school find its numbers decline in the years ahead until it faces closure? If that happens, those who wish for their children to be educated in English may find themselves being educated outwith their own community. Whatever happens is being watched closely as this model may be repeated in other small highland communities in the years ahead - depending on how this 'experiment' plays out.
