Redirection[edit]

Why does Bridgeport redirect to Bridgeport, Connecticut and not here? Kendall-K1 (talk) 15:33, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sending it there, with a hatnote pointing here for other uses, is superior for user experience in aggregate compared with sending it here. For any word "blah", you want to send the redirect to the target that most users were looking for anyway. You then have a >50% chance of landing any given user exactly where they wanted to be with only one page load. For the <50% who wanted another sense of the word, they were probably going to have to come here anyway to find it. Wikipedia:Redirect is the guideline page. — ¾-10 00:04, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I understand all that. What I'm asking is whether Bridgeport, Connecticut is the object of more than half of all searches for Bridgeport, given there are so many other places by that name. I was looking for a different one myself. Kendall-K1 (talk) 01:32, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You may be right. I should have said "largest plurality" rather than ">50%" as in "majority". I believe Bridgeport, Connecticut would get the largest plurality of "what the link creator was trying to point to". So I would say the logic still holds. I would concede that city names for non-huge cities are a class for which the logic is weaker than for other classes. Everyone can agree that the page name Miami should point to the article on Miami, Florida, not Miami, Arizona, or Miami, Texas. I would concede that Bridgeport is not as strong an example as that. However, Bridgeport is the most populous city in Connecticut, so I would still make it the redirect. — ¾-10 17:47, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
