Would it be true to say that at the site of the bridge:

the river is at the start of its rapids, and that no large ships need be catered for.

the ground at the start of these rapids is fairly solid (made of rock) and make for good foundations?

the bridge could be made of a large number of small spans rather than a small number of large spans?
