Two similar songs[edit]

There are indeed cites for a song titled "The Old Flag Never Touched the Ground," by Rosamond and James Weldon Johnson and Bob Cole, perhaps from 1901. See the two sources in this comment (which I relocated from the article text)

"The Old Flag Never Touched the Ground. Patriotic March" was actually written ABOUT Sergeant William Carnery, not by him. It was written by The Johnson Brothers in 1901 and Bob Cole (aka Robert Allen Cole Jr.).
