Metropolitan region vs. “Capital” region

Please don’t confuse the Berlin metropolitan area as Wikipedia defines a Metropolitan area with the “Capital” region as some officials/agencies in Berlin-Brandenburg would like to define the region. According to Wikipedia: “A metropolitan area, metro area or metro is a region consisting of a densely populated urban core and its less-populated surrounding territories, sharing industry, infrastructure, and housing” – note that farming and other distant rural areas are not included. The metro area is shown for example as the yellow parts of the maps and by the lists of towns. Personally, I would also say it’s the area you can reach by public transport with a Berlin ABC ticket. The given reference http://www.berlin-brandenburg.de/daten-fakten/ also refers this as “Berliner Umland”.

The “Capital Region Berlin-Brandenburg” is a construction that government agencies are trying to push, but it simply includes all of Brandenburg with Berlin. It is true, that in the wider sense Brandenburg’s economy is generally, but not exclusively, oriented towards Berlin. Some day they may even become politically united. However, it is stretching it a bit far to say that vast rural areas such as the forests of the Uckermark or the swamps of the Spreewald belong to the metropolitan area of Berlin. It would be like saying all of Connecticut is part of the Hartford metropolitan area.

So, please adhere to the definition set by Wikipedia and do not follow some megalomaniac political redefinition. Alandeus (talk) 13:32, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Mostly this article describes the agglomeration of Berlin which makes the titel of the article misleading, Alandeus you mix up the term metro with an agglomeration which is something completely different. As a result the population density and area was wrong. Almost any city which is not part of a metro area itself has its own metropolitan region, but not all have official metropolitan regions. The "Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region" is an official term, you should describe it as the name for the larger metropolitan area of Berlin in this article. The agglomeration has a population of 4.416.123 on 3.743,21 km2 and a population density of 1.180 per km2. The "Engerer Pendlerverflechtungsraum" which is what most people would call the metropolitan area has a population of 4.490.853 on 4.971,32 km2 and a population density of 903 per km2.

Dear 91.66.78.246 (whoever you are, but undoubtedly German): The aforementioned German Übersicht der Raumabgrenzungen is certainly an interesting source and a starting point for discussions about what the Metropolitan area of Berlin could entail. Like an onion with many layers, there are many options of what could be included. If we look at how Metropolitan areas are used for other cities in Wikipedia, the terms for “Großsdtadtregion” and “Größere Stadregion” (Larger Urban Zone) seem the most appropriate. There seems to be some confusion as to how “area”, “zone”, and “region” are used in German and English by various sources. This official definition of “Region” to include all of Brandenburg seems to be a bit farfetched as I’ve discussed above. Besides, the listed “official website” is currently dead. Wikipedia does refer to “official” sources, but this is not exclusive, as other scientific or academic sources are just as good and may even be free of some bias. Therefore, the Berlin metropolitan area should be limited here to what the two displayed maps show (yellow Metropolregion) anyway.
