Wedding

The pregnancy was confirmed in January BEFORE the wedding. The article should thus mention the pregnancy before the wedding, and the date that the pregnancy was confirmed. Wikipedia should not hide the facts. It's very important that information be presented in the correct order. Wikipedia is not Mr. Cumberbatch's PR machine. It's not your job to try to hide verifiable facts because of the picture they paint. -SuperRabbit89 (talk) 17:31, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

New sections go at the bottom. Can you please cite a reliable source for that information? (See WP:RS for more information on what qualifies as a reliable source). Wikipedia removes all information about living persons that is not adequately supported by reliable sources (see WP:BLP). Ian.thomson (talk) 17:49, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
I had it properly sourced an hour ago, as his Twitter page (which is usable as a reliable source for information on him) says he's married. But someone reverted it. Joseph2302 (talk) 17:51, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
The pregnancy was officially confirmed on 7 January 2015. This is information is backed up by the Guardian article linked in the references. The wedding occurred today, 14 February 2015. This is backed up by the People article linked in the references. However, the two sentences about the pregnancy and the wedding are out of order, presenting an inaccurate picture of the sequence of events. For factual accuracy, the pregnancy needs to be mentioned before the wedding, and the date of the official statement about the pregnancy (7 January) needs to be given. -SuperRabbit89 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 19:35, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
I really should just ask "Which Guardian article? There are 19 cited."
Searching through the whole article, I see what you're talking about, and have swapped the sentences and added the date.
In the future, I recommend phrasing article request changes as "Please change X to Y, for Z reason, using this linked source" with Z reason being something calm and actually a bit apathetic, instead of implied accusations that members of the site are doing something dishonest. Ian.thomson (talk) 19:50, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
@Proud Austrian Paulinian: would you please explain why you keep removing the date from the baby announcement and keep moving it to the end of the paragraph, out of it's chronological order? Ian.thomson (talk) 23:53, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Fan Culture

Possible new section under "In the media" in the "Personal Life" section. The origin of the cumberbitches lies in Benedict Cumberbatch’s starring role on the BBC series “Sherlock”. Benedict Cumberbatch started trending on twitter twenty minutes after the series premiere in 2010 – “the fandom was instant and visceral" (Zuckerman, 2013). The appeal seems to stem from two things: first, his very strange name and second, his very strange face. He is attractive but he is also very unusual looking. Cumberbatch commented that his face “’is something between an otter and something that people find vaguely attractive, or just an otter, which is vaguely attractive’” (Yuan, 2014). His unusual face could be the reason that so many of the cumberbitches use him as a muse to their artwork.

The “Cumberbitch” name was the first and is the mostly commonly used name for Cumberbatch’s fan base however there has been some division among Cumberbatch fans with alternative names such as “Cumber Collective”, “Cumberbabes” and “Cumberbunnies” (Zuckerman, 2013). Cumberbatch talked about his disapproval of the name “Cumberbitches” in an interview with Ellen Degeneres on January 14, 2015. “I went, ‘Ladies this is wonderful, I’m very flattered, but has this not set feminism back a little bit? Empower yourselves if you’re going to get silly about a guy with a little more high regard, self-regard,’” he said. “They wrote back and said, ‘We didn’t mean any harm to feminism. We were just having a little bit of fun with your name’” (McGrady, 2015).

While Cumberbatch does not have a Twitter page, he does use Reddit to hold Q&A’s with the Cumberbitches. Cumberbatch recognizes that his fandom is central to the internet and says, “I engage with it on my own terms, and people seem to really respond to that because it’s me being me, rather than me going”—he switches to a high-pitched voice—“‘Hi, internet, thank you so much! I love you so much, all the feels, squidgies, LOL! Awkward!’” (Yuan, 2014).

Pseudopygmephorellus Benedictcumberbatchi

Just wondered if it was worth mentioning that the bug Pseudopygmephorellus Benedictcumberbatchi has been named after Benedict Cumberbatch - by the comedian Dave Gorman in his show "Modern Life Is Goodish" (first broadcast 22nd Oct 2015 on Dave)

If it's genuine and ratified (though I haven't seen the show yet and haven't found any evidence that it is), it would probably be counted as an award or honour (as per, e.g. Gary Larson#Awards and honors) and could be placed in a new section on List of awards and nominations received by Benedict Cumberbatch and added to List of organisms named after famous people. --Walnuts go kapow (talk) 07:36, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
I have seen the show and it appears to be genuine. Can anyone confirm that this "award" is ratified?

Past relationships

Conflicting (WP:BLP) reports on his relationship with Olivia Poulet as well as Anna James/Anna Jones name, thus cannot be verified as fact (WP:VERIFY). One can't cherry-pick which reliable source they choose (WP:NPOV).

The articles from the Radio Times and the Independent both state that Cumberbatch and Poulet met at university, were together for twelve years, and split in 2011. Both of these are reliable sources. Regarding the sources you have provided, the 2005 BBC press release and 2010 Sunday Times article would suggest they broke up during filming of To the Ends of the Earth, but got back together circa 2006. This doesn't contradict them having a long-term relationship -- many couples have "breaks" -- and certainly doesn't mean their relationship is unverifiable and isn't worthy of any coverage in the article. You seem to be misinterpreting the policies you are citing. Rather, the 2005 press release and 2010 Sunday Times article are evidence of additional information that may warrant being added to the article. I wouldn't be opposed to adding a brief sentence to the article noting Cumberbatch and Poulet had a break.
The 2011 Times article you provided does not contradict the Radio Times or Independent sources in any way. In fact, it actually confirms what they say: "[...] he [Cumberbatch] lived in Hampstead with The Thick of It actress Olivia Poulet for more than a decade until they broke up a few months ago."
The 2014 Ibi Times piece probably isn't reliable, as it seems to be a clickbait piece compiled from other sources. Anyway, the only discrepancy is that it states he broke up for good with Poulet in 2010. And, given that there are multiple reliable sources stating they broke up in 2011, this is most likely an error on the part of the article's author.
Regarding Anna Jones, none of the sources giving her name as "Anna James" that you have provided strike me as authoritative. Getty Images is a stock photo agency, not a newspaper or magazine. This is pure speculation, but it seems possible that whoever wrote the Getty Images caption got her name wrong, and then sources that licensed this photograph from Getty reproduced this error. The 2013 Metro and 2014 Hello! articles are both tabloid gossip articles that likely don't meet WT:RS. The Bustle article isn't the best source either, as Bustle is a somewhat clickbaity site that probably isn't reliable as a source for biographical information. All in all, none of these four sources outweigh the article about/interview with Cumberbatch from the reliable newspaper The Independent which is currently cited in the article. -OneLittleDragon (talk) 08:52, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

Filmography?

Why is there no filmography section for this actor? Literally all the other actors have one. In fact, there's a separate article for it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Benedict_Cumberbatch_performances

The lists there should be added here and then that page deleted so everything can be in 1 place, and this actor's article can be like all the others.

Three children

Benedict Cumberbatch has three children. His third child is a boy named Finn, born in January of 2019. Although he has never officially verified the specific details about the third child, he has mentioned his three sons in this interview, [7], and they were mentioned in this article, [8] He was photographed by paparazzi around November 24th, 2020, in London with his wife and his three children, but it seems no major outlets picked up the photos because they know he dislikes pictures of his children being published. They were shared by fans via social media, including this Instagram account here, [9] I don't know why his team has never released a statement about the third child, perhaps because they have never been asked by any of the UK media outlets, but he does exist and should be included in his bio. A couple of things... 1)The Daily Mail is not considered a reliable source, see Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources#Daily Mail, 2)An instagram post with a paparazzi photo from an anonymous source is also not considered to be reliable. 3)In the NewsHub.NZ interview Mr. Cumberbatch does say "my 3 boys and my wife". That is all we have - he does not mention anything else about this third son, and, unlike the other two children, there are no confirmed details about the boy's age or even his name. I have adjusted the article accordingly. It is my understanding, from my short research on this, that Mr Cumberbatch and his wife are very private about their family life and their children. I do not know why details about this third boy are so sparse but that is their business and I respect it. Shearonink (talk) 03:25, 7 April 2021 (UTC)

Also, would the video technically be an independent primary source, in the (unlikely) case that any part of that would eventually make its way into the article? -- 82.79.139.162 (talk) 23:33, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

Sister died of Cancer

Cumberbatch told Marc Maron on the WTF Podcast this week (December 2, 2021) that his half-sister died of cancer "shortly before Christmas", so I guess that means 2020? (time stamp 1:00:35) I can't find any RSS confirming her death at all, and I know that generally WP:INTERVIEWS don't pass the test. But there it is, his voice, saying it out loud for all to hear. Knowing this now it just seems off to read about her in the early life and education section in the present tense. So anyway, I leave it up to consensus. Either somebody can find RSS about it or the consensus can decide on whether to keep referring to her in the present tense or change it. Bearing in mind the podcast will go behind a paywall in a couple of months, I leave it up to you. Kire1975 (talk) 18:54, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

In the "Personal Life" section, change "Cumberbatch also follows a vegan diet.[211]" To "Cumberbatch followed a vegan diet for 18 months." Or delete the line altogether. The source given [211] is from 2018 and outdated.

Source: interview Esquire November 2021:

'"I was for about 18 months,” he confirms. “I applaud people who are vegan and I enjoyed my journey with it, but it [non-vegan food] just crept back into my life.”'

Slavery and ancestry

Devoting an entire section to this seems WP:UNDUE. The Barbados Reparation Campaign's spokesman has said he did not know who Cumberbatch was and has been misquoted [1]. Additionally, a number of the sources used don't actually mention Cumberbatch - for instance one of the sources used dates back to 1912. I would propose condensing the existing three paragraphs down to one paragraph. ITBF (talk) 22:43, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

family history & slavery

Could you add that his ancestor, Robert William Cumberbatch (who is already mentioned in the article) was an outspoken opponent of slavery and the Mediterranean slave trade? His actions trying to spur Great Britain to intercede to prevent the Mediterranean Slave Trade are described in detail here;
