all that i know, is that this hotel was sold from my family before or during world war 2, i have facts at my cottage up in the adirondaks on chase lake, photographs and documents from the 1920's of my great grandfather, the owner at the time in front of it. BATEMAN is in big brick letters that has been in there since the building was built, also by my great grandfather. they have a giant bateman sign in the back that they have been trying to sell to us. next time im up in the adirondaks i'll check with the town clerk, and check the records, and photocopy and submit up to here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.226.234.222 (talk) 19:33, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2007 discussion[edit]

I have not made up the story. I have only cited the history since my grandparents, Harold and Marion Mahar, owned it. Please note that the hotel (previously called the Howell Hotel and the Kellogg Hotel) is listed in New York's historical registry. I was actually raised in the hotel, so I am not relying on hearsay. excuse me, that is not true, this hotel has been in my family, it was sold during or before ww2. it was my great grandfathers brother that sold it, i cannot believe someone would make up a story like this.

--> No, Rebecca is telling the Truth. The Hotel was sold by Marion when she was unable to keep up with the payments. I was raised in the hotel in my early part of my life and spent many hours in the bar with my Grandma and the locals that frequented the bar. -- Robert Mahar Jr. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.195.46.2 (talk) 21:33, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have gotten ahold of the US department of the interior national park service, national register of historic places and they have sent me a 13 page document. Section number 8 Page 2 states: "In 1877 Kellogg changed the name of the hotel to the Kellogg house. The hotel was again sold in 1909 to Carol H. Bateman who made several alterations to the building (primarily to the first floor storefronts and front entry) and changed the name to the Bateman Hotel. The Bateman family owned and operated the hotel until 1983.Seanbateman7 (talk) 21:31, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what the US Interior National Park Service uses for source material, but I grew up in that hotel and my grandparents owned it. Their grandparents owned it before then according to my great-grandfather's obituary.

Photos, other history needed[edit]

Well it is interesting and rare for an NRHP site, that several persons have knowledge of inside stories on this place. Do any of you have any old photos? Or documents mentioning it in any way? I would be glad to help anyone upload and add them to this article. Also, i will link in the NRHP nomination document and accompanying documents. doncram (talk) 04:46, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My family has many photos. I had originally uploaded a beautiful photo of the hotel, but the Wiki editors continually removed it, which eventually made me tired. I will get back to you at the end of the week with photos. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rebecca22193 (talkcontribs) 13:25, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I have some new information which may shed some light, I realize that I have gotten my time periods confused, so this is the new information that I have. It was the Kellogg House when my great great grandfather (Carroll) bought it. My great grandfather (Niles) had it for only a short time before he sold it. I'm assuming he sold it in the 50's because I was told around WW2. Which is why it would be named "THE BATEMAN" because it was in my family for a while, until we sold it. Sorry for being so challenging in the past. I have asked other family members about it and have gotten the same information... Hopefully this can be helpful, I have e-mailed someone on the History registry asking them to please digitize the file that they have. I have forgotten about this wiki page which is why I never uploaded/sent any photographs and unfortunately I believe our camp is closed for winter, but I may be able to sneak back up there.

Thanks for the clarification. This article has been in a "dispute" status since you made your original comment. We'll see what happens! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rebecca22193 (talkcontribs) 19:12, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OCTOBER 25, 2012

A quick and not too thorough examination of the deed records in the Lewis County Clerk's Office shows the following:

In October of 1953 there is a deed from Jennie Mahar as the executrix of the Last Will and Testament of Michael A. Mahar to Harold J. Mahar and George F. Mahar. There is a description of the property and, near the end of the deed, a statement that “the above described property” was conveyed to Michael A. Mahar by three separate deeds; one from Andrew T. McAndrews and wife dated July 26, 1915, one from Charles D. Williams dated July 24, 1916 and one from the executors of the Last Will and Testament of K. Collins Kellogg dated April 24, 1933.

In November 1953 there is another deed conveying the property from George F. and Virginia Mahar to Harold J. and Marion D. Mahar. I believe Marion ran the hotel until she sold to Northwood Hotel Co., LTD. in the 80s.

It looks like Mike got it in 1915-16 and it stayed in the Mahar family for about 80 years. I am guessing that Harold and George took over after Mike's death and after a while George wanted to get out.

My mother is the Mrs. David (Mary) Owens of Ithaca mentioned in Mike's obituary. I can be contacted at ceo79sp@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

Best Regards,
