Thanks to Theramin who put the first proper information on this page. I have expanded and edited somewhat, as some of the meaning was not clear. Correct me if I'm wrong, the references I looked at agreed the fountain was built by a merchant, not the Pope.

Theramin's text minus the references:

Il Babuino (Italian: "the baboon") is one of the talking statues of Rome. Like the other five "talking statues", pasquinades - irreverent satires poking fun at public figures - were posted beside il Babuino in the 14th and 15th centuries. The pasquinades (or, in Italian, pasquinate) of il Babuino were more properly called babuinate, but had similar content. The statute is an ancient depiction of a declining Silenus, but the people of Rome christened "babuino" because they considered it ugly and deformed, like a monkey. In 1571, Pope Pius V built a public fountain in the via Paolina, which he had decorated with the statue. The road was nicknamed the "via del Babuino" as a result. After being moved to various other locations in Rome, the statue returned to the road named after it, the via del Babuino, in 1957, and is now sited next to a statue beside the Chiesa di S. Atanasio dei Greci. Recently, the well behind il Babuino has been painted with an anti-vandal paint, to prevent the graffiti reappearing.

To do list:

  • The dates need to be established properly.
  • A better photo of the fountain in its graffitied state?
  • References and more information for the fountain being moved around the city, returning in 1957.

Since pasquinade refers to the sculpture called il Pasquino, and since il Pasquino is "a battered ancient statue dug up in the course of paving the Parione district and erected at the corner of Piazza di Pasquino and Palazzo Braschi, on the west side of Piazza Navona in 1501, by Cardinal Oliviero Carafa", then "14th and 15th centuries is nonsense, like a "declining Silenus". --Wetman (talk) 03:42, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that makes sense. ProfDEH (talk) 16:53, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
