Act of Parliament[edit]

Under a federal act of parliament the APS is a "entity" of the Australian Commonwealth (The Australian Protective Service Amendment Bill 2002)

Merger Proposal[edit]

I propose that Adam Dunning be merged into this article, because:

  • All the key information from the Dunning article is already included here;
  • This AFPPS article provides a much better context for Dunning's murder as part of a peacekeeping mission than the standalone article does;
  • Dunning is notable for one tragic event. Per WP:NOT#NEWS and the general notability guidelines for people, this is not sufficient to justify a standalone article; and
  • Merging the Dunning article into this one will asist readers by helping to locate relevant AFPPS information in one place.

This article is reasonably long but not too long to accommodate additional information on Dunning's murder. I have already added the key facts from the Dunning article to this one and don't envisage that a successful merger would add that many more lines. If the merger proceeds Adam Dunning would redirect to Australian Federal Police Protective Service.

Other views and opinions welcome. Euryalus (talk) 11:25, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have now also noticed that most of the Adam Duning article is a copyvio from a piece in The Age about the new training complex. I have reworded the copyright material and included the relevant bits in this article under "Peacekeeping". This done, I have redirected the Adam Dunning page to here. Restructure proposal[edit]

I would like to suggest that this page be retitled Australian Protective Service and deal with the APS from its creation until it ceased to exist as an independent agency. A link to the Australian Federal Police entry would pick up the ongoing functions following integration of the former APS staff.

The current title may reasonably lead readers to perceive that the AFPPS is an agency in its own right, whereas Protective Service Officers (an employment category) are principally employed within the three outputs of "International Deployment Services," "Protection Services" and "Aviation Services" (AFP Annual Report 2006-07).

Renaming[edit]

Following my earlier proposal I have renamed the page to 'Australian Protective Service.' I have commenced redrafting sections of the article with the aim of treating this page as a history of the APS as an agency. This article should conclude with the merging of the APS back into the AFP in 2004. Entries regarding the Protective Service function post-integration should be addressed in the AFP entry. Ex - PSO1 1990's BNE Airport[edit]

As the first of many new PSO's posted to ICAO class airports, to replace uniformed AFP members as first response to CT, it was a truly steep learning curve. We did intensive 'Airport Security Related' courses which included expert lecturers. On the down side, the APS act of 1984 was open to ambiguous interpretation on occasion,(Community Policing of the Airport Issues) and building a sound understanding with State Police. But in general it no doubt layed the groundwork for the AFP-PS today. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.210.232.2 (talk) 17:25, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
