some old text[edit]

Apponaug is a neighborhood in central Warwick, Rhode Island, situated on Apponaug Cove, a tributary to Greenwhich Bay and nearby Narrgansett Bay. The name Apponaug is a derivation of the Narragansett Indian word for "place of oysters". Indeed, Apponaug cove holds one the richest shellfish beds in the United States and was, for many centuries prior to the arrival of European settlers, densely populated by the Narragansetts.

Today, Appoanaug is considered "downtown" or central Warwick as Warwick City Hall is located here as well as Police and Fire headquarters. Apponaug is located at the confluence of three of Warwick's primary streets; Centerville Rd, Greenwich Ave., and Post Rd.

Merger Proposal[edit]

support. These are two articles about the same place; it's a no-brainer. Merenta (talk) 15:46, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What merger proposal? What two articles? I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about. -CitrusFreak12 (talk) 21:04, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apponaug Historic District[edit]

Apponaug Historic District is currently a redirect to this Apponaug, Rhode Island article about a neighborhood. The NRHP-listed historic district (HD) is apparently just a few properties, specifically: 3376, 3384, 3387, 3391, 3397-3399, and 3404 Post Rd. It includes just 5 contributing buildings over 2 acres. Isn't the neighborhood considerably larger than that? I believe the HD is significantly different than the neighborhood. The HD is wikipedia-notable on its own. To clarify and to allow development of the HD article, i want to start a separate article on the neighborhood. I'll wait for comments, but otherwise in a few days I will proceed to split it out. doncram (talk) 14:17, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Apponaug section is essentially the area around a junction between two major roads and does indeed consist of only a few properties. Your "belief" is misguided. We don't need to have two articles on the same locale. --Polaron | Talk 15:40, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Polaron must have noticed that yesterday i created a separate NRHP HD article at Apponaug Historic District, replacing the redirect. Polaron, I'll put in a request for a copy of the NRHP document describing the historic district right now (and will be happy to share it if i get it in electronic form). That document should provide some clarification, and serve as a reliable source to characterize the relationship between neighborhood and HD. doncram (talk) 16:25, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I received that document and will share by email if i receive an emailed request. It seems clear enough from it to me that the HD is different than the area referred to as Apponaug, so I expect to develop the separate HD article and that it should stay separate. Let it develop for a while, anyhow. doncram (talk) 19:52, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

what is Apponaug?[edit]

The article is confusing to me. The current version states that Apponaug is " a neighborhood in central Warwick, Rhode Island..." but then states "Apponaug consists of what is effectively a large rotary." Is Apponaug actually used as the name for a traffic circle, like as in a named bridge or a named street? This seems to be wrong.

I do have some characterization of Apponaug originally as site of a port, and later as an "old mill village", and other info, in the Warwick MRA document which included the Apponaug Historic District nomination among other nominations. Will try to add to this article. However, what is currently regarded as Apponaug is not going to be settled by anything that i have, it's just clearly bigger than the Apponaug HD. doncram (talk) 19:52, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
