Grammar[edit]

The grammar on this page is really bad and in some places it is difficult to tell how to go about correcting it.

Sacred Wars[edit]

How come there is no mention of the Sacred Wars in this article? I thought the entire purpose of the Great Amphictyonic League was for the protection of Delphi that precipitated the Sacred Wars. This needs to be added, at least as a point of reference, to this article, otherwise this article will remain substandard. Stevenmitchell 09:34, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology[edit]

I moved here this passage added by User:The Cat and the Owl per WP:FRINGE:

The term Amphictyony derives from [[Greek language|Greek]] ''Αμφικτυονία'' (''Αmfiktuonia'')<ref>[http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.04.0058%3Aentry%3D%231982 Amfiktuonia], Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, ''An Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon'', at Perseus</ref>, from ''αμφικτύονες'' (''amfiktuones'') "neighbours"<ref>[http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.04.0057%3Aentry%3D%235901 Amfiktuones], Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, ''A Greek-English Lexicon'', at Perseus</ref> and that from ''αμφί'' (''amfi''), "on both sides"<ref>[http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.04.0057%3Aentry%3D%235705 Amphi,] Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, ''A Greek-English Lexicon'', at Perseus </ref> + ''κτίζω'' (''ktizo''), "to create, found"<ref>[http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.04.0057%3Aentry%3D%2360376 Ktizo,] Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, ''A Greek-English Lexicon'', at Perseus</ref>, from ''κτοίνα'' (''ktoina''), "a local division, township"<ref>[http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.04.0057%3Aentry%3D%2360396 Ktoina], Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, ''A Greek-English Lexicon'', at Perseus</ref><ref>[http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=Amphictyonic+League Online Etymology Dictionary]</ref>. The term ''Amphictyonic league'' is a [[tautology]].

This etymon is completely unreferenced or to be exact the "citations" above only confirm that these two Greek words (ἀμφί, κτίζω) exist but they do not confirm the etymological relation between them and Amphiktyon. Plus, it makes no sense: κτοίνα & κτίζω are indeed related but the root of Amphiktyon's second compound is κτυ- not κτι- (κτυ- maybe an obscure Greek root or most likely a Pre-Greek root). The etymology above seems to be taken from this notoriously fringe website. --Omnipaedista (talk) 05:41, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Or the outdated (1873) tertiary source: American Cyclopedia. --Omnipaedista (talk) 06:06, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Amphictyonic league/Delphic Amphictyony[edit]

This article covers amphictyonic leagues, of which the Delphic Amphictyony is merely the most familiar. The aleternative, to chop up the article into the smallest possible fragments, would not be an example of encyclopedic thinking and would not offer the reader an overview of the subject. An article titled Delphic Amphictyony would only partly cover the subject.--Wetman (talk) 05:49, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
