Book signing in LA/American Airlines Flt. 191[edit]

I really enjoyed the mini series on Playboy, the life of Hugh Hefner, and how he started his magazine empire. It was great coverage, as I remember living through most of those tough times.

The only thing that disappointed me was that the mini series failed to include a tragedy that happened in 1979. There was a book signing event in LA, Memorial weekend of that year, and on the Friday of the opening, a number of local authors and Playboy Execs, including Sheldon Wax, one of Hefners original editors boarded American Airlines Flt. 191 from Chicago to LA. The DC-10 lost an engine, and crashed 31 seconds after takeoff, killing all 271 people onboard, and two on the ground. There was to be a party at the Playboy mansion west after the opening night book event.

it was never covered nor given any mention.

Today there is a memorial remembering all the victims of the crash in a small park in Des Plaines, Illinois, including the names of the Playboy executives.

Maybe this will be included in some future followup on Playboy, and the life of Hugh Hefner.
