Wig-wag

When reading the article through it hit me: Though lights and sirens are described wig-wag is not mentioned even once? I have written a small paragraph about it. Unfortunately I was unable to locate any sources describing the effect. There is probably a few grammar mistakes and the paragraph can also be expanded a bit - but now I have started on it. --|EPO| da: 12:43, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Emergency Ambulance most common type?

I seriously doubt that - eg here in Vienna most ambulances are vehicles transporting non immediate care patients with only basic life support / emergency equipment on board. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.152.197.48 (talk) 03:27, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

It differs in many countries when something is an ambulance. E.g. in Denmark, Norway and Sweden only emergency vehicles are called ambulances. I personally believe that the emergency ambulance is the most common type on a world-wide basis. --|EPO| da: 12:23, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
I agree with the original point that emergency ambulances are probably not the most common (especially given the definition we are using) with patient transport probably outnumbering them by some margin. I recall removing this specific claim from the article some time ago because even if it is true, there was no citation to support it. I know i removed it from the lead, but where else does it still say it? OwainDavies (about)(talk) edited at 17:13, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
In the section "Functional types". --|EPO| da: 21:15, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Reuse of retired ambulances

I see that this section has twice been removed, which forces me to acknowledge that there may be a problem with it. What I wish to present is a later portion of an ambulance's life cycle. At the moment, the only hard proof I have of reuse is the photo provided, though I have seen the vehicles put to several emergency and civilian uses. I have removed all of the text that is not supported by the image pending further source material(s). Do other editors find this acceptable? I'd like to leave some note of vehicle reuse in the article, since the design of an ambulance qua ambulance (robust mechanical and electrical systems, interior work spaces, interior and exterior lighting, storage spaces, etc) makes them particulalry suited for these conversions. --Badger151 (talk) 12:09, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Find some sources. Add some content supported by those sources. --Biker Biker (talk) 13:20, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
It was cited, but someone mangled the cite so badly it eventually got deleted. [1] Exit2DOS CtrlAltDel 23:42, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Images (again)

This article has way too many images. It could have a 50% cut and still be a very valuable reference. Does anyone have any particular passion about saving or deleting specific images? I can see a reason for keeping pictures of specific types e.g. "proper" ambulance, car, motorcycle, bicycle, air ambulance, etc; but endless variations on the same basic thing, which essentially are ambulance-spotters saying "I want a pic of an ambulance from my country", do not add value. Discuss... --Biker Biker (talk) 16:29, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Standards section

I'm a bit puzzled how removing most of the references and adding an erroneous reference constitutes globalizing (or "globalising" if you must) a section. I think I've restored the most relevant information. It's good that there is information about standards used in other countries, although I think the article would be improved if it said something more than "some countries have standards". (I am unfortunately not qualified to compare national standards for emergency-vehicle construction.) 121a0012 (talk) 04:24, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

@121a0012: - The original edit was very focused on the US, which isn't appropriate on a global article, so the rewrite focused on the application of standards globally. There's still uncited informaton in there - notably the assertion that the existing standard is being withdrawn. We really need a good reference for that, but that's lacking at the moment. A lengthy comparison isn't a bad idea, but would almost certainly need its own daughter article (like Ambulance standards or something similar). OwainDavies (about)(talk) edited at 10:13, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
The first paragraph of the cited Nebraska letter says the the standard is being withdrawn, and gives the precise date. (In point of fact, GSA has already tried to withdraw it, but was persuaded to delay the withdrawal.) 121a0012 (talk) 03:27, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Nomenclature

What is the "working area" called? By this, I mean the part where the patient is kept and cared for on the way to the hospital, as opposed to the cab, where the driver sits. Are there names for this area of an ambulance? I am almost certain there are different names for this area in the US and the UK, and probably different names in Australia and in Indian English as well. Such nomenclature would probably be good for the article if sources can be found. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 00:01, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
