The relevant Latin word is abellana, Spanish avellana. Is any Abilene known to be named from any form of this word?
The one in Syria certainly does not mean 'hazelnut'; that in Kansas is named for it, and gave its name in turn to that in Texas (according to Stewart's American Place-Names); all other American usages are most likely from one of these. —Tamfang (talk) 02:26, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just using the information from the source. It isn't saying that each was named because the Latin origins of the word "Hazelnut", just that the word originally came from the Latin, then Spanish, word. I found another source that says it is a Hebrew word for "grass" as well, although not sure about that. If you have a better source for the root of the word, I'm fine with that, I just felt that we needed to have some source for the name. Dennis Brown (talk) 02:38, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
