Sponsorship Name - Proposed Move[edit]

I propose the move of this Article to "A Championship", as the use of sponsorship names is discouraged. While the Premier League is sponsored by Barclays, it is still referred to as Premier League on Wikipedia. If no one objects to this move, I will do it myself. Fire away. Fionnsci (talk) 13:41, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Intended to do this a while ago. Go ahead GauchoDude. Onetonycousins (talk) 01:41, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops, apparently needed to do the following:

Newstalk A ChampionshipA Championship — Requesting the move of Newstalk A Championship to A Championship to discourage use of sponsorship names, following such leagues/examples as Conference South (Blue Square South) and Football League Championship (Coca-Cola Football League Championship) among others. GauchoDude (talk) 23:21, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - Uniformity is not a good reason to remove it, because there is no uniformity elsewhere. There are many examples where we don't use the sponsors' name, but there are also many where we do - see this post. The claim that there is a universal ban on sponsors' names is a myth. There may be other reasons to remove the sponsor in this case, but lets hear them first. Knepflerle (talk) 10:32, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Support - Uniformity is definitely not the case, however the fact that while the competition may not change from year to year, it's entirely possible that the sponsor of said competition could. In this particular case, the competition is the "A Championship" which happens to be currently, and incidentally, sponsored by Newstalk. The competitions I have mentioned above have gone through numerous sponsorship changes (Gola, GM, Nationwide, Blue Square), but are no longer known by their sponsorship names. Instead, they are known by the common denominator name of "Football Conference", while the other stuff redirects. Many of the competitions you posted in your link, such as the Emirates Cup, Umbro Cup, Danone Nations Cup, VTV-T&T Cup, Vodacom Challenge, Setanta Sports Cup, etc., were created in conjunction with the sponsor, have held the same sponsor throughout, or are a dead competition with the first two ticked and it was the only name it was known by. Either way, it seems like you're speculating Newstalk with forever remain the sponsor or it will collapse with Newstalk as its only sponsor, where as I'm speculating that the sponsorship will change. Needless to say, I'm probably going to stick with my side and you'll stick with your side so we're at an impasse (although the others above agree with me).
Support - The article was originally 'A Championship' and there was no discussion needed back then to change it to 'Newstalk A Championship'. I understand that there is no need for uniformity on this issue on wikipedia though in this particular case, 'A Championship' is my preference. Fionnsci (talk) 00:19, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is the A Championship in the League of Ireland?[edit]

  • I noticed there is some bickering about this. To be completely pedantic, it doesn't seem to be. The link [[1]] states "to act as a pathway for players and clubs into the League of Ireland", which would indicate the A Championship isn't in the League of Ireland. It's definitely the third tier of football in Ireland, sitting below the First Division and it's also administered by the FAI, but it doesn't seem to be part of the LoI.

TheMightyPeanut (talk) 07:58, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • It's not, no. That's why this article exists [[2]]. If it was then there would be no need for such an article as the League of Ireland article would satisfy requirements. Fionnsci (talk) 21:52, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • How to distinguish "Championship named after the letter A" from "a championship"? Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:40, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is always referred to as "the A Championship" or if not "the Newstalk A Championship. Not a problem at all as I see it! Fionnsci (talk) 16:24, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
