Calling the anti-Sullan forces "democratic" leads to anachronistic misunderstandings. The Gracchi, Marians, Sertorians, etc. were not democratic-republicans, any more than Spartacus was a proto-Marxist. These were factions based on personal loyalty and calculated cost/benefit analysis.
