The unfathomable[edit]

What white guy could imagine being black in America on April 3rd, 1968? If you were in your 20s, that meant being a war child for a country that barely even allowed blacks to serve. Then came the repressive 50s conservatism that later made the 60s so necessary. If blacks now made up half the league, what did that really provide? Money? Not usually. Security? Family? Only with real work. Many black business people made more while paying their high price as well. Not to beat on whites of the day, but they did not know. They could not know. Now imagine April 5th. Civil unrest has been expressed for years now. Many blacks can no longer wait for their fair slice of the American pie. Then, a peace activist, a Nobel Prize laureate, is shot in backwater Memphis. After JFK, who believes this was a loner's act? Black history before this point is largely bad history, or at best, poor history. Now a speechmaker, a reverend, hounded by the FBI, is murdered for being decades ahead of his time in his thinking. RFK would soon follow. Even supporting blacks while being white could get you shot. The NFL had plenty of black players, but did not start until fall. Baseball was largely white, as was hockey. But basketball had to play it's playoff games. The NBA's black participants could have walked off in boycott. Some did boycott the Olympic team that year. But they composed themselves and played for an audience of mostly white fans. Some of whom still called them niggers. This was the scene less than 40 years ago. Hard to believe.

POV tag[edit]

This concerns POV tag cleanup. Whenever an POV tag is placed, it is necessary to also post a message in the discussion section stating clearly why it is thought the article does not comply with POV guidelines, and suggestions for how to improve it. This permits discussion and consensus among editors. This is a drive-by tag, which is discouraged in WP, and it shall be removed. Future tags should have discussion posted as to why the tag was placed, and how the topic might be improved. Better yet, edit the topic yourself with the improvements. This statement is not a judgement of content, it is only a cleanup of frivolously and/or arbitrarily placed tags. No discussion, no tag.Jjdon (talk) 17:37, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
