Ryan William Loutos (born January 29, 1999) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball (MLB).
Career[edit]
Loutos attended Barrington High School in Barrington, Illinois, where he played baseball and posted a 0.47 earned run average (ERA) and 92 strikeouts over 59 innings pitched as senior in 2017.[1] After high school, he enrolled at Washington University in St. Louis where he played college baseball. As a senior in 2021, he went 11–1 with a 1.33 ERA over 13 starts.[2]
Loutos went unselected in the 2021 Major League Baseball draft and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an undrafted free agent.[3] He made his professional debut with the Palm Beach Cardinals, going 1–2 with a 5.56 ERA over 22+2⁄3 innings.[4] He opened the 2022 season with the Peoria Chiefs and was promoted to the Springfield Cardinals and Memphis Redbirds during the season.[5][6] Over 46 games (two starts) between the three teams, he went 3–6 with a 3.96 ERA and 72 strikeouts over 63+2⁄3 innings.[7] He was selected to play in the Arizona Fall League for the Salt River Rafters after the season.[8] He returned to Springfield to open the 2023 season and was quickly promoted to Memphis.[9] Over 50 relief appearances, Loutos went 2–5 with a 6.53 ERA and 84 strikeouts over 73 innings.[10]
Loutos began the 2024 season with Triple–A Memphis, compiling a 1.72 ERA with 18 strikeouts and 4 saves across 13 appearances. On May 20, 2024, Loutos was selected to the 40-man roster and promoted to the major leagues for the first time.[11]
