Jizzakh State Pedagogical University (JSPU) is one of the largest institutions of higher education and research centers in Uzbekistan, and a part of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of Uzbekistan.
The university was founded on August 8, 1974, following the decree No. 256 of the Uzbekistan Ministry of Public Education. Dr. Bozorboy O‘rinboyev, a distinguished professor and Doctor of Philological Sciences, was appointed as the inaugural rector. In 1989, by a decision of the Ministry of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the institution was named after Abdulla Qodiriy, a seminal figure in Uzbek literature and the founder of the Uzbek novelistic tradition.
On June 21, 2022, Jizzakh State Pedagogical Institute named after Abdulla Qadiri was granted the status of Jizzakh State Pedagogical University on the basis of the decision No. PQ-289 of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On measures to increase the quality of pedagogical education and further develop the activities of higher educational institutions that train pedagogical personnel".[1]
The rector of the university is doctor of pedagogical sciences, Professor Shavkat Safarovich Sharipov. In 2024, the university have 12 faculties, 28 specialities and 35 departments. The number of students is 20,722. 731 professors work at the university. The educational institution has Master's and Extramural (special extramural) departments. There are 20 specializations in the master's department. Full name of the institution: Jizzakh State Pedagogical University named after Abdulla Qadiri. Short name: JSPU. The total area is 101,766 m², of which 9,980 m² is the study area, and 9,100 m² is the dormitory area.

The Jizzakh State Pedagogical Institute was established on August 8, 1974, based on decree No. 256 issued by the Ministry of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The initiative to establish the institution was shown by Sharof Rashidov, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan. The Jizzakh State Pedagogical Institute commenced its operations in September 1974, initially opening faculties in Uzbek language and literature, Russian language and literature, labor education, pedagogy, and primary education methodology. The institute started with 2 faculties, offering 5 specializations and comprising 6 departments, a teaching staff of 50 professors and instructors, and 425 students. Bozorboy O‘rinboev, a candidate of philological sciences and associate professor, who was then the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at Samarkand State Pedagogical Institute (later known as Samarkand State University after 1992), was appointed as the first rector.
Construction of one- and two-story buildings for the institute began in what is now the "Orda" ecological park in Jizzakh city. Thanks to Sharof Rashidov's initiative, the foundation for the current building of the Jizzakh State Pedagogical Institute was laid in 1982. Rashidov was invited to lay the first brick for the foundation of the building. Starting from 1988, the institute's staff moved into the new academic building. Following a decision by the Ministry of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan in 1989, the institute was named after Abdulla Qodiriy, the founder of the Uzbek school of novel writing and a distinguished author.
Activites[edit]
Following the decree PQ-289 issued on June 21, 2022, by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, titled "On measures to improve the quality of pedagogical education and to further develop the activities of higher education institutions training pedagogical staff," the Abdulla Qodiriy Jizzakh State Pedagogical Institute was elevated to the status of Jizzakh State Pedagogical University.[1]
The current rector of the university is Shavkat Safarovich Sharipov, a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences and Professor.
The university, as of now, comprises 13 faculties, 28 directions, and 41 departments. It hosts a student body of 19,273. The faculty includes 542 professors and instructors. The institution features Master's programs and Distance Learning (including special distance learning) departments, offering 20 specializations in the Master's program. The Distance Learning (special distance learning) department of Jizzakh State Pedagogical University is located in Bostan town, Zarbdor district, Jizzakh region. Currently, students are enrolled in Distance Learning (5-year) and Second Degree programs. Additionally, the university encompasses one academic lyceum and two technical schools.

Jizzakh State Pedagogical University Academic Lyceum[edit]
The Academic Lyceum of Jizzakh State Pedagogical University was established by Order No. 96 dated April 30, 2001, by the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The lyceum offers educational programs in four teaching directions and employs 89 qualified teachers. It has signed collaboration agreements with similar departments of higher education institutions in the Jizzakh Region, leading to the establishment of branches for "Natural Sciences," "Foreign Languages," "Exact Sciences," and "Social Humanitarian Sciences" departments within the lyceum.
G'allaorol Service and Technical College Affiliated with Jizzakh State Pedagogical University[edit]
Following the decree PF-5812 of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated September 6, 2019, "On additional measures to further improve the vocational education system," and Order No. 355 by the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education dated June 30, 2020, on organizing the activities of technical colleges affiliated with higher education institutions, the college was established. It accommodates 720 students, with 212 young learners receiving education in 6 directions from 19 highly qualified pedagogical staff.
Rectors[edit]
- From 1974 to 1986, Doctor of Philology Sciences, Professor Bozorboy O‘rinboyev, served as the head of the institution. He was succeeded by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Usmonali Nishonaliyev, starting March 1986, under whose leadership the institute moved to a new building.
- In 1990, Professor Bozorboy O‘rinboyev was re-elected as rector and served until November 1992.
- Starting from November 1992, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Sodiq Ahmadovich Nishonov, was appointed as the rector and served until 1996.
- From May 1997 to April 2005, the university was led by Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor G‘ofurjon Isroilovich Muxamedov, who expanded the educational building to accommodate 3000 students. A dormitory for 400 students, summer sports grounds, and the information-library center were reconstructed during his tenure.
- In 2004–2005, the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor (late) Bahrom Mamajonov acted as the rector.
- In March 2005, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Olimjon Musurmonovich Do‘smatov, the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Samarkand State University, was appointed. Under his leadership, two sports halls and a two and three-story building for the Faculty of Physical Education were constructed and put into operation between 2006 and 2008.
- In 2014–2015, the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor (late) Ne‘mat Adilovich Alimov, served as acting rector.
- In April 2015, Doctor of Sociology Sciences, Professor Xolbekov Abdug‘ani Jumanazarovich was appointed as the rector. Under his leadership, the main building and auxiliary buildings of the institution were fully reconstructed and equipped according to modern requirements in the 2019–2020 academic year.
- Since March 2020, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Sharipov Shavkat Safarovich has been serving as the rector, under whose leadership significant efforts have been made to strengthen the material-technical base of the institute and enhance its scientific potential. New educational directions, faculties, departments, and chairs have been established.
Notable Alumni[edit]
- Umidjon Raxmonberdiyev, a graduate of the Mathematics-Informatics faculty from 1992 to 1997, is currently working as a senior specialist at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna, Austria.
- Shuhrat Sodiqov Muhammadjonovich, who studied at the Russian Language and Literature faculty from 1987 to 1992, served as the Minister of Information Technologies and Communications Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan from 2018 to 2021.
- Rustam Abdurasulov Abdurayimovich, a graduate from 1979 to 1983, served as the acting rector of the Jizzakh Regional Institute for the Retraining and Professional Development of Public Education Employees from 2009 to 2011.
- Shavkat Sharipov Safarovich, who studied at the university from 1991 to 1995, initially worked at the Nizami Tashkent State Pedagogical University and has been serving as the rector of Jizzakh State Pedagogical University since March 2020.
International Cooperation[edit]
The international relations and cooperation efforts of Jizzakh State Pedagogical University in the field of education aim to:
- Enhance the qualifications of the faculty;
- Encourage extensive participation of faculty members in international scientific and practical workshops, conferences, and symposiums;
- Facilitate the involvement of faculty and students in international exchange programs and training;
- Invite foreign teachers and professors to the university for the purposes of improving the teaching process and exchanging experiences.
The international cooperation in the field of education includes partnerships with South Korea, the United Kingdom, France, the Russian Federation, Belarus, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, India, and other countries based on intergovernmental agreements and contracts. These agreements cover the exchange of faculty and students, participation in various conferences and symposiums, joint scientific research, publication of scientific articles, and other activities. Within the framework of the "Education Cooperation" agreement signed between the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China on November 8, 1999, 40 students, Ph.D. candidates, and young specialists from various higher education institutions of Uzbekistan have internships in Chinese higher education institutions.
The university has established close connections with the British Council, the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Program, the United Nations Development Programme, and others. These programs and projects are directed towards enhancing higher education at JDPU, improving the teaching and methodological process using advanced foreign experience, enhancing the qualifications of faculty members, and expanding student exchange programs.
JDPU actively participates in the Erasmus Mundus educational programs of the European Union. Higher education institutions of Uzbekistan, including JDPU, take part in the Erasmus Mundus program aimed at fostering academic mobility, enhancing cooperation between universities, and strengthening partnerships with the European Union. Through these programs, students and faculty have the opportunity to undergo scientific and practical training at European higher education institutions.
Significant attention is currently given to involving foreign teachers and specialists in the educational process through partnerships with foreign collaborators. Active cooperation in this direction is conducted with the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). Additionally, Jizzakh State Pedagogical University has joint educational programs with two foreign higher education institutions, including a "2+2" program with Baranovich University in Belarus and a "3+1" program with the Belarusian State Pedagogical University.
